A "W" for Roy Jones Jr. is Great, where a "W" for Joe Calzaghe is good...but neither man is facing a major loss in my opinion.

    Lets put things in perspective...

Roy Jones Jr. is 39 years old....FACT.

Most great fighters at 39 are a shell of their former selves or retired...FACT. Check what Leonard was doing in his late 30's-40's.

Roy Jones Jr. is expected to lose by most boxing fans and insiders....FACT.

Roy Jones Jr.'s best days are probably anywhere from 7-10 years ago....OPINION/but i think many would agree thats also a fact.

    __________________________________________________ ________________

Joe Calzaghe, while he is past his physical prime(36), is one the best fighters in the world.....FACT (in fact, I think hes probably #2 p4p.

Joe Calzaghe is expected to win...FACT. 4-1 favorite

Joe Calzaghe is undefeated and has had some of his best wins recently...FACT.
    __________________________________________________ ________________

Does Calzaghe deserve credit for beating Roy Jones Jr., absolutely. Why? Roy is still a pretty damn good fighter even at nearly 40 years old. But in the same way Lennox Lewis can't say he beat the best Mike Tyson, Joe Calzaghe/nor his fans should claim he beat the best Roy Jones Jr. Why? Its simply not true.

Now if Roy beats Joe Calzaghe, one could also make the argument that Roy didn't beat the best Joe Calzaghe. Due to the fact that Joe Calzaghe is 36 years old, it is reasonable to say hes is also not in his prime. I agree, but a win for Jones(for obvious reasons), is still bigger than a win for Calzaghe. A loss for Joe, I would argue is not bad for Joe. Joe could say that Roy is one of the best ever and he managed to turn back the clock. A loss for Roy, he could simply say Joe at this stage was just too much for him to handle. So really there is no major loser on the 8th, there can only be a winner.

If Joe beats Roy. Good for him. If Roy beats Joe, great for him only because he is such an underdog. The point is, whoever loses, should not have their legacy damaged too badly at all. And that while a win for Joe is good, a win for Roy is great due to each fighters being a different places in their careers. But when either fighter loses, neither should take a big legacy hit.

If Joe wins assuming my computer doesn't break, I will be one of the first to give cong**** to his fans. And I'll also be one of the first to eat a nice big piece of humble pie, and I admit I was wrong.

thanks for not taking this thread as a jab at Calzaghe.

I hear alot of people talking about what this will mean for both fighters. And I in my opinion, a Jones win would obviously be bigger. But thats to say that Calzaghe win wouldn't be good. And I don't either fighter suffer that much from a loss.

So really the whole night is a win.

nope, if calzaghe wins, people will think of him as being overrated and known for only really beating one 'good' fighter(kessler) as his win against hopkins was so close, it would be a major loss, and i can picture him disappearing from the radar for a good while

basicly my point is, you say neither man is facing a major loss, i say otherwise about calzaghe

I think even the biggest calzaghe fan would say Jones win in a prime vs prime situation.

thats not saying Roy Jones today is no good, i think he'd still beat someone like taylor and pavlik... obviously if jones takes calzaghe's 0 it would mean a great deal and add to his career even further, calzaghe is a legend after all.

if calzaghe beats Jones it doesnt mean he would beat a prime Jones but it does give him a good name on his resume (like it or not) and Jones is still better than the majority of fighters today.

Calzaghe NEEDS to win more than Jones but his legacy would not be ruined from losing, he still has hopkins,21 smw defences etc.

Jones doesnt need to win and a loss wont effect him, a WIN would make him a top 10 ATG and ive said this all the long.

and you know.. obviously id be upset if calzaghe lost but if he was to lose to anyone I'd prefer it to be Roy than anyone else.

It would elevate Roy to top 10 ATG and he can retire on a high.

People will just say Calzaghe beat a shot fighter, it's not a good situation for Calzaghe, Jones hasn't proven anything to say he's better than the majority out there, people will just look at Jones' resume and see he lost 3 times in a row 2 by brutal knockout and came back to beat Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw and a past prime, fat Tito Trinidad, it's not a good situation for him.

But in reality, I think it is a good win for Joe because 65-70% of what Roy Jones was, is still better than many light heavys today.
