heavyweight boxing use to rule the world........

now we're lucky if we get a 30 second segment on espn between major league soccer and the water skiing chipmunk.

As far as the heavyweight go, Louis would be next without a doubt. after that it starts getting a little foggy. Im tempted to throw Holyfield in there, but Jim Jeffries seems to have been very popular as well as some other early century fighters. Tough to guage these things.

I vote Joe Louis.. During WWII EVERYONE tuned in to watch his fight with Schmellin.
A great moment in American history.. I don't think Ali, Tyson or De La Hoya EVER had practically EVERYONE in the country watching.

I agree it was a great moment in boxing history. Arguably it was its most important also. But Dempsey was more popular amongst Americans, and Ali was more popular worldwide. In fact, Ali may have the most recignizable face amongst athletes worldwide Alltime. Not sure that translates into the positive populararity I think we're taling about here, but I believe it to be true.

              Seriously guys?

Ali wasn't as popular in his prime than he is now. He was a controversial figure that you either loved or hated. He is shown more love now for his courage to stand up in what he thought was right.

Tyson? People didn't LOVE Tyson they way they loved Sugar Ray Leonard. He was the Golden Boy before the Golden Boy. Tyson everyone feared and wanted to see him KO people. But he didn't have that mega-watt smile that the average family household would adore.

              SUGAR RAY LEONARD!

it has to be Tyson. for his time, tyson drew more ppl to boxing than any other boxer ever. Ali also drew alot of ppl to the sport but not at the grand scale that tyson did.

lol DLH is almost unheard of outside USA and Mexico, Tyson and Ali are household names to non boxing fans, hell even non sport fans; throughout the world.
