That killer, ruthless instinct that a boxer needs to have...

Do you think you could have it?

I'm talking about knowing that you're absolutely destroying someone and they're in pain, and you have to inflict more damage to them before you can stop them....could you do it?

I don't think I could, personally. I know in the ring, the other person is trying to do the same to you and it's dog eat dog scenario, but damn....you have to be ****ing ruthless as a boxer.

I don't think I could finish off Davey Moore like Duran did. I don't think I would have landed those extra punches like Mercer did to Morrison. I don't think I could finish off Watson like McCallum did.

Could you? Could you really hurt someone like that?

Btw, this isn't a criticism or anything. It's just amazing to think the dymanics of a fight, and all that is going on.

Yes, I could do it, but I'd try to be careful not to permanently damage someone if I recognized them as being in serious danger. If they were close to being knocked out and I wanted to preserve their health I'd go to the body and take them out that way.

I'd KO them, then pick them up off the floor like Tyson used to.

    Mike's a nice chap.

if it was my job to do it, then yeah. I usually have mercy like any sane individual when I am unfortunate enough to get into a fight situation and the other guy is hurting but I'm sure I could condition myself not to.

Most of us have had street fights where you just aim to hurt someone and feel nothing else, and I think that if you worked hard on your focus, you could find a way to feel like that for an entire fight.

I guess I would say that I think I could do it at least once (if I had a full career) but I doubt I could get into the frame of mind on a regular basis.

I think it's part of why certain boxers talk trash. It's not just about selling tickets, part of it is that they want to dislike their opponent so that it's easier to have no sympathy during the fight.

I want to agree but then i think, well, he used to put people in comas at middleweight. Thing is Roy himself is very cautious of getting hit.

That's an interesting point in the last paragraph, and probably has some validity to. I mean, I remember hearing DLH doesn't look at opponents when they square up just before the bell cos he doesn't want to have sympathy.

Regarding the theory about street fights....I've never had a street fight (yeah, I'm not letting no chav **** my looks up) so I can only imagine that sort of mentality, but boxers tend to have respect for the other boxer alot of the times, it's a unique situation they're in, but to still go out there and finish someone off....damn.

                I couldn't do it. I just couldn't.

Damn, what a video. The epitome of killer instinct.

The actual fight that did inspire me for this thread was Moore against Duran. I mean...goddamn. That was brutal.
