Why would Calzaghe say **** about Pavlik when Pavlik is more popular?

I don't know. I'm not a fan of either, but Calzaghe is a prick.
The quotes are taken out of context.

Calzaghe said what he said over a month ago, not just now. It was part of an interview where he was specifically being asked about comments that Pavlik had made about him, and were part of an ongoing public feud between the two.

Here's the article, dated September 18th

Joe Calzaghe has accused Kelly Pavlik of trying to make a name for himself off his back.

Pavlik, the undisputed middleweight champion, has repeatedly stated his desire to share a ring with Calzaghe before the Welshman retires.

However, Calzaghe says that The Ghost is merely misleading the boxing public, claiming that the American has already twice turned down offers to fight him.

"Pavlik is just trying to make a name for himself on my back,” the undefeated 36-year-old is quoted as saying by The Sun.

"I tried to get a fight with him twice before. We approached him immediately after I beat Jeff Lacy in 2006 but he declined.

"He fought and beat Jermain Taylor instead and immediately had a rematch with him to dodge me again.

"It's easy to come out of the woodwork and mouth off when you've already signed to fight somebody else.”

Calzaghe believes it is significant that it was only after he had agreed to fight Roy Jones Jr., in a bout which is LIVE on Setanta Sports, that Pavlik really stepped up his campaign to set up a bout with the Newbridge southpaw.

Indeed, Calzaghe is baffled as to why the Ohio native did not call him out after his win over Gary Lockett earlier this year.

"When Pavlik beat Gary, he actually didn't say anything about me at all afterwards,” Calzaghe mused.

"It's funny that he's started to get a bit brave now that I've signed to fight Jones — but you get used to that bulls**t in boxing."

Pavlik’s next outing is against Bernard Hopkins, whom Calzaghe defeated earlier this year to establish himself as the number one light-heavyweight in the world.

Calzaghe is in no doubt that Pavlik will emerge triumphant but remains utterly unconvinced of his talents.

"Pavlik will win the fight, mainly due to his youth, although Hopkins still has the ability to make it very messy,” he said.

"But he [Pavlik] is definitely overhyped and I think Mikkel Kessler would beat him."

I'm not sure if that's the best example to use.

Roy Jones was apparently willing to fight in Wales, and if money was the main thing that they cared about, they'd be fighting in Las Vegas, rather than New York.

Either way, I don't think it proves who the biggest draw is worldwide. If a fighter can generate 1 million in PPV buys in Germany, 2 million in the UK, and 3 million in the US, he is a bigger draw than someone who can generate 4 million in the US but zero elsewhere.

Those are just made up figures, and I have no idea which of them in more popular, but my point is that just because someone is a bigger draw in the US, it doesn't make them the bigger draw worldwide.

I'm not a hater or anything. I'll never intentionally disrespect a fighter, but Calzaghe is the one boxer who I wanna see get his ass kicked.

No, in Wales. Still, I'm not sure what your point is? Money is money, and if we're talking about the amount that a fighter generates, the tens of thousands of people that pay money to see him fight are worth taking into account, aren't they?

I just think it WAS about money, hence the not fighting in Wales. If JC sticks to his guns and makes this his last fight, what better way to go out than in front of 35k+ of yoru hometown fans? Why, instead, be the champ yet have to travel to the States to fight a non champion in his backyard (so to speak)? Both being self promoted, MSG probably gave them the best cut of the gate IMO.

He never said it was his last fight. He said it might be, depending on how he performs. My opinion? He will fight once more after this, and that will be in Wales to 40,000+ fans.

We all know that the U.S. is the hotspot for boxing, and NY and Las Vegas are the biggest places to fight in the world. It's a worldwide sport, but the U.S. is where the money is at.

Then it won't be against Pavlik OR Dawson lol.

Just an aside, the reason fighters come to the US is because they want to become known and, more importantly, they want to get PAID. It's why fighters from all over the world set up shop in the US. They do it so much that posters who don't know better, claim someone has a bias for Cotto, Trinidad, Glen Johnson and more...not realizing none of them are from the US.

The reason why Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao, the Klitschko's (although those dudes are absolutely KILLING it overseas), and even Prince Naseem came to the US was to make more money. Yes Calzaghe can put 35000 in seats versus Manfredo but his career-high payday came against Bernard Hopkins in Vegas in a fight on regular US TV.

So it's disheartening to see fighters from anywhere call out US fighters but yet never seem to make their way over for anyone. I mean, why wouldn't you? Every fighter loves money. I guess no one likes to lose.
