Is mma more brutal and damaging to the body than boxing?

boxing is more brutal to the body...especially the training methods and losing weight to make weight. Its not normal for a human body to work that way. And in MMA just one hit, and the fight is over, so there's no more additional damage to the body, but in boxing the fighter takes continuous pounding, normal people could die without proper training. imagine fighting 3 mins for 12 rounds.Comment

I was with a group of friends last week fliping channels back and forth between mma and boxing. I have actual hands on expierience in both but several of my friends do not. The ones that didn't were suprised of the violent nature of mma and felt it was way more damaging to the body than boxing. What do you think?Comment

More cuts and broken facial bones with MMA, far more damage in boxing because of heavier gloves (mass), including concussion, internal injuries. And the difference in the length of the fights makes a huge difference as well.
MMA is to Boxing, as the National Guard on weekend exercise is to a deployed Navy SEAL unit. Only thing they have in common is that they're both fighting men.
but it got me wondering, would too much sparring be dangerous long term for the brain?
what happens if you put 2 KO artists, with 16oz. sparring gloves, no headgear, 12 rounds.
they will have a hard time finishing each other off, because of the much bigger gloves. thus, more punches landing. sounds pretty dangerous, right?
correct me if i'm wrong:
pro bout, 12 rounds, no headgear, 16oz gloves = high chance for short-term damage, very high chance for long-term damage
sparring session, 3 rounds, headgear, 16oz gloves = low chance for short-term damage, very low chance for long-term damage
5 round MMA pro bout = very high chance for short-term damage, low chance for long-term damage.Last edited by boxingsmash69; 10-12-2008, 08:25 PM.Comment

Plus it sucks watching people eat big macs before a tournament.Comment

Boxers are more likely to die, and boxers are more likely to have brain damage.
MMAers are much more likely to have problems with their limbs and joints, due to the juijitsu aspect.
Neither is exactly more brutal, but I value my brain more than my arms.Comment

I don't believe so.
Many MMA matches end in quick submission.
Boxing matches typically go on round after round with guys striking each other with impact attacks. Tally up the death totals, and the number of people who have been severely disabled: and it's not close.
Boxing is by far the more deadly/damaging of the two sports.

Nobody at fault, everyone did their best. It was ruled that inadequent padding on the cage possibly started the hematoma and it went downhill.Comment
