  • Hopkins Is Being Underestimated, Pavlik Hyped

A lot of the talk surrounding this fight has been about "Pavlik being the first man to stop Hopkins" but I think this is a case of "falling in love with a puncher". Pavlik may win, but those expecting some kind of blowout are forgetting just what Hopkins brings to the table, and buying into the Pavlik "huge power" mythology a little too eagerly.

First of all, Pavlik is going to have to overcome fighting at the highest weight he has ever fought at in his life, and he's in against a guy who just one fight ago was recognised as the best LHW in the world. Pavlik should be OK at the weight, but will his power, great against guys 10 pounds lighter really carry up to LHW in the same way? I don't think so. Even Roy Jones found that fighting LHWs was harder than he expected, until he got used to it.

Second there is Hopkins himself. It appears that since his loss to Calzaghe he has been universally written off as an ancient relic, but is this really fair? In that fight he was up against maybe the hardest working SMW/ LHW there has ever been, one with great speed and a chin that allowed him to show no fear of Hopkins' power. And Hopkins still took the fight to a split decision. Can Pavlik's chin be relied on to let him pressure relentlessly a la Calzaghe? Maybe, but maybe not too, Calzaghe was the first and only fighter ever to be able to pressurise Hopkins like that, so Kelly Pavlik certainly has a tough task on his hands to be able to follow suit.

And Hopkins stamina? Well, no doubt it is not what it was in his younger days, but its not as bad as his critics make out. He looked pretty good still for the majority of the Calzaghe fight, and when he did get tired it was late in the fight, which is hardly unusual, especially against someone like Calzaghe. No doubt if Pavlik is able to fight at the pace he wants then the advantage goes to him, but if he can't, which is not unlikely, and Hopkins manages to slow him down then suddenly we are looking at a fight between an inexperienced MW still learning the game and the most experienced LHW there is, one with every trick in the book to turn a fight his way. Oh yeah, one thats never been stopped too.

This fight is going to be a much closer affair than many imagine, and is a much greater test for Pavlik than is being made out. Hopkins is not the force he once was but still has the tools to spring a surprise, as he has before in his career, and if Pavlik can beat him it should go down as a tremendous win, perhaps even Pavlik's best given all the circumstances. If Pavlik can beat him.

I agree that Hopkins is being written off way too much for this fight and Pavlik's power is being exagerrated by some people and I expect it to be an ugly fight at times that would make some rounds hard to score because of Hopkins' tactics, which could lead to the fight being close.

But Hopkins' stamina is bad, really bad, he can't throw over 35 punches a round now, I do think it was more apparent towards the end of the Calzaghe fight because Calzaghe wore him down but his stamina hasn't been good for years now.

I agree. Hopkins has very clearly defined limits as to what he can do now, and simply does not attempt more, because he knows this. However, he does have the ability to last the distance in fights precisely because of this approach. The exaggeration I refer to is the notion that come the end of the fight he will be some sort of wheezing cripple. This seems to me to be mostly based on him taking a break in the Calzaghe fight, and while he did seem tired I don't think he looked that bad, certainly not completely gassed, I mean I've seen fighters in worse shape after four rounds, and that was round 10!

I agree people are tending to write off Bernard a little, but it is hard for some Hopkins fans to be positive after the way he tapered off against Calzaghe, in the last several rounds he began to look like an old fighter and rarely does he look like an old fighter, so good he is at concealing the fact by conserving energy and fighting in crafty spurts, Calzaghe put a lot of pressure on and Hopkins somewhat wilted, he couldn't fight at that pace...I'm a Hopkins fans myself, and I do think he has a chance in this fight, a slim chance, Pavlik doesn't throw as much as Joe C but he does hit harder and there's been another interlude, another period of not fighting for Hopkins, even MONTHS count at this stage of his career, at his age, and I dont think he can sustain his workrate for long enough to take Pavlik, if he does it will be jaw dropping and the perfect note on which for Bernard to retire

I agree, it wasn't as bad as some people say but it was pretty bad, it's the first time I've seen him like that, whether it's because of Calzaghe or not should be answered when he steps into the ring against Pavlik.

I don't agree. I think Pavlik will come out with an aggressive, and controlled attack.
Just to see what's in the old masters tank. Which I think is a good idea.
Like I have said before, if Pavlik gets too happy, and gets too confident, he might eat a huge counter by Hop.
If he does, I see him fighting back, and putting Hop on his heels.
What a lot of YOU fail to realize, is that some of us on here that are picking Pavlik to take B-Hop out, know that he doesn't have the knock you dead power of a Jackson, or Hearns.
No, Pavlik hurts you. And keeps on doing it. And while you are recovering, he hurts you some more.
I already made my pick. The young lion comes of age on the 16th.

i agree that pavlik is overrated.. a decent fighter but highly overrated.. his power is decent but he doesnt have A+ ko power like people hype it up as.. he has a good workrate and has good timing but he is pretty much a basic fighter.. he's the kind of fighter that doesnt have a plan b

Pavlik is one of my favourite fighters. However, he is a simple fighter and B-hop is smart and he could figure him out quickly. I'm thinking Bernard will counter him easilly landing some great shots. It's just whether he can handle Pavliks constant power punching.
