I didn't see Hopkins get worn down, as much as Calzaghe just seemed to figure out his one weapon... That straight right counter.
Hopkins looked spent as hell from the opening bell. His age had caught up to him before the fight IMO... I just didn't see Calzaghe doing a ton of work that would cause Hopkins to hit the wall in the middle of the fight, considering there was not a ton of body work that Joe was putting in.Comment

Those shots, even though they are open handed and don't have that much snap behind them can wear on a fighter, especially one that is over 40 years old, and I thought Hopkins slowed perceptibly in the last few rounds.I didn't see Hopkins get worn down, as much as Calzaghe just seemed to figure out his one weapon... You actually might be right. I forgot about those low blow resting periods that he took.Comment

The reason people attribute Hopkins performance to age rather than what Calzaghe did is because Calzaghe's punch output dipped in half those first 5-6 rounds. Yet Hops was slowing as early as round 4. By the latter rounds he looked pathetic. Once Joe realized - after those first four rounds - that Hops was a shell, he went to work. Before that he was fairly tentative.Comment

That's what Calzaghe normally does though, he takes about 4 or 5 rounds to adapt to his opponents' style. The reason people attribute Hopkins performance to age rather than what Calzaghe did is because Calzaghe's punch output dipped in half those first 5-6 rounds. He did a really nice job countering Hopkins right hand with a short hook. In fact, he made some great adjustments in there. However, by the time he began to adapt in this fight, Hopkins was already looking for a blow.
There are rumors Hopkins looks great in training camp for Pavlik but if he looks as old as he did against Calzaghe, he may get KTFO. On the other hand, I imagine if he lands some of the same rights on Pavlik that he did Joe, he could score a KO himself.Comment

I'm not sure about Hopkins looking for a blow from round 4 onwards, I thought he looked pretty good until the 8th round or so when he started slowing down badly. He did a really nice job countering Hopkins right hand with a short hook. I agree with the second part, if Hopkins looks as bad as he did towards the end of the Calzaghe fight, then it'll be a long night for him but if he's still fresh enough to counter and take away Pavlik's right hand, there could be an upset in the making.
Either way, I think the question of whether Calzaghe actually wore down Hopkins or if it was just age could be answered on October 18th.Comment

Yup! I'll be there for that fight. May be Hopkins' last dance. I have a great deal of respect for him but, in a way, I'm rooting for Pavlik to win big. I don't think I can bear another borefest, close decision that allows him to fight another two years.I'm not sure about Hopkins looking for a blow from round 4 onwards, I thought he looked pretty good until the 8th round or so when he started slowing down badly.
