Trying to think of some examples.

Edwin Valero suffered a head injury from a motorcycle accident that banned him from fighting in the US. He just now is being allowed to fight here after years of being banned.

LOL.How can you take shots from a pro boxer after suffering an injury like that???
        Great thread BTW.

        Some more...

Ernie Schaaf ,suffering a brutal knockout at the hands of Max Baer and possible brain damage, and then dying 6 months, from the possible after-effects,at the dynamite fists of Primo Carnera.

Holyfield nearly suffered kidney failure after his fight with Dwight Qawi.If his wife hadn't have rushed him to hospital shorty after the fight,he would have been on a dialysis machine for the rest of his life.

Ron Lyle.Got shanked and suffered massive blood loss, while he was doing time for armed robbery. The prison doctor though didn't give up on him and he somehow survived.

Willie Pep is likely the foremost example.

As for eye problems, wasn't John Henry Lewis the first black light heavyweight champion totally blind in one eye, from an injury in the ring?
Frazier also suffered I think a retinal detachment. He apparently came into his second fight with Foreman with a contact lense in one of his eyes.
