Can't remember where exactly but I recall seeing a clip where Floyd said he had a great deal of respect for Pernell and called him a "master boxer" or something similar.Comment

That was pretty cool. Whitaker is probably my all time favorite fighter. And I agree that at 135-140 he was the best defensive fighter ever. He could stand right in front of fighters and maske them look silly missing him.His fights with Jose Luis Ramirez and Rafael Pineda were flawless. His fight with Roger Mayweather and Freddie Pendleton showed that Whitaker could stand and **** with a hard punching fighter too. All time top 3 lightweight who would have beaten any of the fighters today at 135 convincingly imo.Comment

I've seen Floyd say that the only boxer in recent years who's defense was up there with his was Whitaker. But what else could he say really?
I've also seen Roger Mayweather give Pernell big time props which means a lot coming from him. I read where Pernell said Pep was one of his idols . Pep called Whitaker before his fight with Chavez to see how his camp was going. It's kind of like a cycle with fighters from different eras. I don't know if any of you have seen it, but when Roger Mayweather fought Pernell he got in his face during the pre fight physical and started talking ****. Pernell punched Roger in the face with his left and the two had to be separated. It was funny to watch. I saw it on you tube.

I'm more inclined to back the modest fighter, but Pernell has every right to boast, he had one of the most entertaining and elusive defenses I've seen on a fighter. I also study Floyd's defense and the fella is a defense wizard, but Whittaker was magic in it's purest form.Comment
