Here is how I feel about this fight: American fight fans are in denial about two things, 1) Calzaghe's ability and 2) Jones' ability.

Lets get this straight, Roy Jones has not looked good for six years. His fights with Amju, Hanshaw and Trinidad do not represent some sort of rennaissance, he looked bad in all of them. In the one that most seem to feel indicates improvement, Trinidad, Jones looked frail, old and washed up. He and Felix literally stood in front of each other exchanging blows like two sacks of sand. The praise Roy attracts for this fight seems to add up to, "Roy was able to actually throw some punches, and he seems to have worked out what a guard is for." Wow. He's a boxer, that really is some achievement.

Now Calzaghe: all I ever hear from Calzaghe's critics is that he can't punch. The fact he possesses one of the most complete and varied games in boxing today is completely ignored. Counterpunching masterclass againt Lacy? Never happened. Comprehensive display of offensive and defensive boxing skills against Kessler? Deleted from history. Nope, Joe is an ineffective slapper who is wide open to counters, look at what Hopkins did to him! Fine up to a point, Joe didn't look great against Hopkins, but still massive chunks of what Calzaghe did are being ignored. For someone who is 'wide open' he sure doesn't actually get hit that many times per fight, does he? And of course we must never admit that Calzaghe placed Hopkins under constant and relentless pressure from the beginning to the end of the fight, meaning Hopkins had little option but to clinch or face a never ending rain of 'windmill slaps'. No siree, we mustn't admit that.

The point is this: talk up Roy Jones attributes as much as you want, and ignore Calzaghe's if you like, but do so at your peril. In reality Joe Calzaghe possesses virtually every advantage imaginable over Roy jones in this fight and pretending he doesn't won't make that harsh truth go away.

Joe does not have every single advantage over Joe.... Handspeed, Power, Accuracy all goto Roy without question... he can hit faster harder and more accurate than joe all day... and he will.

Didn't Calzaghe win in America

That was in Las Vagas. Only one of the three judges was biased against Joe.

This will be in the New York area, where a higher percentage of the boxing judges are jingoistic - they LOVE Roy Jones and dislike Brits.

If Julie Lederman works the fight, she will not score a round for Joe, unless there's a knockdown. I'm willing to bet 50 K to anyone's 1 K on that. Care to bet?
