I've FINALLY gotten over Cotto losing to Margarito. Reason why he lost:

Defensive punching vs Marg's bone breaking punching.

Cotto was fighting and punching on the retreat all night. Without his weight behind his punches, Marg just shrugged them off. You could see he was punching to escape Margarito. Marg was planting his feet and gutting Cotto when he could connect. Mostly, he missed...but he did hit Cotto enough to make him run.

Anyone here play baseball? Ever been fooled by a slow pitch? Marg's punches was slow....it threw off Marg's timing when he covered up. He was used to fighting guys faster than him. By the time he thought Marg's punch had missed - BAM! Even if it was partially blocked, it had some impact.

Just watch the later rounds when Cotto was on the ropes and he would put up his gloves to his face. He waited for that impact to land too long. He even leaned into his gloves as Marg punched his guard.

Also, Marg's head was on a swivel. By rolling with the punches, the impact wasn't as great. Cotto was hitting him all night and Marg's head looked like a bobble head. Like an oak tree vs the wind, always bending to the punch, never breaking. Ironically, Marg goes by the name of Tornado.

Margarito is a sneaky slow fighter that will walk you down like the Terminator. The only guy that knew his timing and was able to handle his onslaught was Joshua Clottey.

it has somewhat to do with punching... but mostly it has to do with cotto's stamina. Cotto doesn't have the stamina to go 12 rounds and he wasted a lot of energy early throwing big shots that although were landing were no match for margarito's chin.

probably no welterweight can stop margarito, so to beat him you have to pick your spots and pot shot with counterpunches like clottey, or outwork him like paul williams.

Cotto doesn't have the stamina to outwork margarito, and although he had the skills to counterpunch with margarito, he didn't have clottey's patience and was throwing too many combos and tiring himself out.

But the stamina was robbed from Cotto because of Marg's body attack. Remember that Cotto out hustled Mosely for 12 rounds. Cotto has the stamina as long as no one is trying to break his ribs.

He doesn't have bonecrushing strentgh? He would have K'od cintron much earlier then. He hass a great chin and great stamina.

He traded a lot more than he shoould've IMO. And also, I think he took Margarito for granted and caused Cotto to fade after throwing so many punches trying to keep Margarito off.

I still think Cotto can win a rematch though.

So what do you predict in the rematch if it happens?..

Very well put tho..and great analogy with the baseball statement..Marg heart, stamina, and chin overcame skill that night..plain and simple..

I got over it 20 min after the fight was over..I realized Cotto is still a much better fighter and is much more exciting to watch..IMO..I don't mind Margs style..but just not my cup of tea..

Thank you!!! all the Cotto-lovers keep saying the same bull**** over and over "Oh Cotto lost the fight because of stamina" that is the most absurd and ***** excuse I've heard in my life. At least there's a few people who also admit and points out the fact that Tony went to Cotto's body for the first 6 rounds before starting to aim up high knowing Cotto would wear down, he chopped him up like a ****ing tree.
