Is Calzaghe a more dangerous fighter than Tarver and Glen Johnson?

The fact that Toney can probably still beat half of the heavyweight top ten should tell you he is an all time great. You're right, he underperformed a LOT and made a lot of fights closer than they should have been. He hardly ever wins wide decisions over his best opponents, but that's because the rounds are usually very hard to score, though they should go to Toney.
He clearly beat McCallum the first time and got a draw.
He got robbed against Griffin TWICE.
He got robbed against Peter once.
I'm glad we're discussing this because I've been going back and scoring Toney fights for about a month. It's irritating at times to watch because you know Toney could win a lot more clearly than he does if he pushed himself more, but his style is to let the other guy come to him, make a mistake, and make the guy pay. When a guy pushes on him, it looks like he's losing.
I think most of us know that Toney would eat Calzaghe's lunch.Comment

Get over Kessler already. It's really boring now.
I was going to buy his career set but never got around to it. His fight with Iran Barkley shows how good he was in his prime imo. Great defense, and quick counter punching.
Shame he is so lazy these days, it was always going to happen to him at Heavyweight. With no weight limit why bother..Comment

I watched one of Toney's fights at middleweight and right after he says he can't make weight anymore, yet he fought there like 10 more times after that. That's crazy that he was able to keep pushing himself down there for so long.Comment

I think it was more he didn't want to, than being unable to. Imagine how great Toney would have been if he hadn't had problems with eating too much. I think he's an ATG as it is, but damn..Comment

Very good point about the 'occasion', I've had the same thoughts myself. With it being a big fight Calzaghe will be tense, like he was in the early rounds against Hopkins, and may be a bit tight or cautious or whatever.Hmmm, I'm slightly surprised to see squeals optimism on Joe, or rather pessimism on Roy. And I've made the argument that if Joe can hurt Lacy and Kessler than he can hurt Roy. Can is a funny word though, Roys defence is probably still better than both of those guys. I mean they were both in front of Joe not adapting to good stances or angles, so just got repeatedly hit. I know Joe positioned himself very well to make that happen. But I can't see Roy getting hit anywhere near as much. He'll at least adapt to suite throughout, something neither Jeff or Mikkel did much of at all.
Roy even now is just too clever and quick to allow himself to be totally out classed for 12 rounds, he'll mix it up and confuse Joe at points. I still think Joe will take a good 8 rounds convincingly, and Roy will only manage to grab a few looking good in spells. Will have to see though. Joe seems to be very perceptive of the fact whomever adapts best to eachother will win the fight, if he takes a good mind set into the ring I'm sure he could totally run away with it and knock Roy around, hurt him a little. I think the occasion, being in the ring with admired legend, still quick and confusing, will mean he won't pull that off though.
As for Roy, his major problem is simple, he's an old fighter and his mobility is very poor. His defence has gone from awful to OK over his last few fights, but it basically consists of being static and covering up, to be really good defensively you need foot and body movement, which Roy does not have to any great degree. I think this will work against Roy a lot, Calzaghe is going to love having that immobile covered target to punch at.
For me Jones is just too old to do well in this fight, and how well he does do is going to be dictated by the degree to which Calzaghe has slipped. I am a little scared this might be a lot, as Joe seems to look older everytime I see him, but if he's still got it then it should be an easy win.Comment

I think its arguable that Toney was more skilled than Calzaghe, they are both good in different areas. On longevity, Calzaghe himself has had much greater longevity than most boxers dream of, and he's been at the highest level the entire time. Toney has longevity sure, but are his days as a journeyman heavyweight that much of an accomplishment?Comment
