Honest answer? It was so TV channels could schedule it easier.
This is the real reason. The Mancini fight was used as an excuse to justify the change so that title fights could fit within a 1 hour time slot (with commercials), which was highly attractive to the major networks, so the commissions were eager to accomodate. 12 rounds was also already the established standard under 15 rounds, I've never heard of 13 or 14 round fights in the modern era.

It is no coincidence that Boxing has taken a dive in popularity since 15 rounds was phased out.

Rounds 11-12 are not the Championship rounds. Rounds 13-15 are. Most of the great moments in boxing history have taken place in the championship rounds.

      Marciano KO's Walcott

      Leonard KO's Hearns

The list goes on and on.

All of the "wars" that have gone the distance in recent years were robbed of their conclusion.

Yeah, 15 round fights were great but if it really does increase safety then I'm OK with it but if it's only for the networks then I want them back.
