If he was shot he would not have won. But there is no doubt he was past his best. He made the right decision retiring after this fight instead of taking a rematch at that stage of his career and going out with a loss.

He wasn't shot, he still had his ability imo. But, he had lost motivation, and wasn't trained well. His retirement was more a lack of motivation, althought his skills had dulled some by then as well.

i would be embarassed to call that a victory if i were him, its not somthing i would be proud of,

Lewis knew he would lose to a fully prepared Vitali so he retired,

he was not shot but he was not at his best just like Vitali wasnt either.

i and im sure everyone else would have loved to have seen a rematch

Agreed. But I doubt a shot Lewis would beat a prime Vitaly.

Im sure he realized he was past his best and would lose to a fully prepared Vitaly. Thats why I commend him on retiring. He knew he was past it. Why go out a loser?
We all would have loved to see a rematch, but LL did the best thing he could do for himself at that stage of his career. Do you not agree with this Herbert?
