Calzaghe: I'm 100% retiring

Who has Jones or Pavlik ducked? Some predictable comments, some more insightful. I wish Joe woulda ventured to the states earlier, but going by what happened he fought the best Americans that were in the division, Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy and others all in the top ten at the time. May not be the absolute best all round but this whole expectancy of jumping through hoops in America is so out dated and un-realistic it's unreal.
A good few in America just didn't know that much of him before Lacy because of the networks and general ignorance, so think he has pretty much only a few years of meaningful ness in his career and late on, wrong. You just started taking significant notice late on and are pissed it's so late that some other elites are older and he's now close to retiring as planned, and unlikely to lose to the new latest american whom will win this time.
Joe hasn't actually ducked anyone contrary to some beliefs, unlike a lot of other elites even Jones and Pavlik, whom genuinely have ducked. Calzaghe's never turned down any fight, is 36 and breaks his ****ing hands in most fights, and hardly talks way more **** than the average boxer of today. Give the guy a break and keep things in context.Comment

he's a bit stuck on Calzaghe. You should always try and call how you see it. I see Calzaghe having a really tough night with Jones and he might lose that one, with Pavlik would people actually put real money on him beating Joe, I doubt it very much. He's made for Joe from the feet up. Like Enzo said boxing is like learning the guitar, Pavlik has one chord. Jones is a guitar god even at his age.Comment

while i would like to see joe fight pavlik, or the dawson/tarver winner it's his choice. he has been a great champion, and to go out now is his perogative, and he is still one of the greatest ever at 68.Comment

If what Calzaghe is saying is true,it hurts his reputation more than it helps it.Pavlik didn't have any major wins in 2006 as that was before the Taylor fight and he was regarded as an up and coming contender. Why would he recently say in an interview that "Pavlik isn't ready for me" when they offered him a fight before his win over Jermain Taylor? His offer after the first Taylor fight is also bogus because there was a rematch clause that Pavlik had to honor.Last edited by ALT-Assassin; 09-03-2008, 05:24 PM.Comment

Kessler called out Pavlik, saying if Joe doesn't fight him I will, no response from Pavlik whatsoever, not even a maybe in the future. AA on national TV called out Pavlik, varying interpretations but I took him as saying he wanted him full stop and would do it asap for the right deal. Pavlik hasn't really responded or said much, just a maybe in the future really. The only time Pavlik's really talked and it's with Calzaghe, whom is 2 weights above, has said he's fighting Jones now then retiring.
Steve Collins was desperate for a fight with Jones, Nigel Benn, countless others infact mentioned in a thread recently.
I don't really want to get into this though, it's another topic and always spirals.
Your often gona want a boxer to face another guy, it's inevitable.
Ultimately you can't begrudge someone finally earning a good buck for a long career beating whomever was put in front of him often in the top 10 of the division, not jumping through hoops beating a guy he and most know he would as he's done so to a better version in Kessler (whom is in the waiting) and retiring as planned at 36.Last edited by Kris Silver; 09-03-2008, 05:33 PM.Comment
