Is Joe Calzaghe an ATG great fighter???

I just wanted to make it known that IMO Lewis is an ATG HW.Comment

No he isn't. he is in the same boat as Marciano except I think Marciano had a little better resume. Calzaghe has fought no great fighters in their prime and the only greats he has fought were way past it just like Marciano. Being undefeated holds 0 value for me.Comment

He is a great fighter for his era. To be an all time great, you need to beat other great fighters in a true weight class IMO. Joe just does not have that distinction under his belt. He also fought mainly in an unheralded SMW division, which will be frowned upon by Boxing Historians.
Joe will have a place, but it will not be among the elite. If you want to make it, be in a real division, like the list below:
Flyweight
Bantamweight
Featherweight
Lightweight
Welterweight
Middleweight
Lt. Heavyweight
Heavyweight
There are still many who frown upon the "in between" weight classes. Now if Joe caps it off with a win over Jones and Pavlik, then he will have a real argument as he bested some damn good names, over the hill or not. I know my opinion will not be a popular one, but please remember it is those divisions which hold historical significance.Last edited by deanrw; 08-26-2008, 12:15 PM.Comment

He's got a great accomplishment of bein SMW champ forever and not losin all his career so far. He'll get in the HOF for that, but will he be thought of as an ATG? No. Maybe remebered as great during his time, but not amongst the best fighters ever.Comment

Yup. Kickass picture btw.Comment

Agreed. It's just the fact that a lot of guys have National biases and jealousy issues. Or haven't been watching boxing long or don't critically think.Comment

i dont think he's an ATG...he hasnt done enough...
i mean he does have some great accomplishments but overall he hasnt really built a resume that is worthy of ATG status...
take away hopkins and kessler on his resume and what is he? an average overseas fighter who does well in his own country but never really stepped it up to the international talent level.Comment
