I knew the name of joe Calzaghe before HALF these jokers even watched him for the very first time. I only knew the name from following Jones jr. I didn't really pay any attention to him. When joe was fighting a bunch of nobodies in his back yard I was watching Prince Hamed put on great shows (just to show i'm NOT a biased American). The Joe calzaghe vs Kessler was the only fight that interested me, because I liked Kessler. A young and hungry guy. The same reason I like Haye.

Alternatively, there were some Calzaghe fans who predicted with a reasonable amount of accurace the outcome of a Lacy/Zaggs fight. I said many times, weeks before the fight ever took place, that Lacy was going to be in trouble, he was tough and talented, but too inexperienced and I didn't believe he'd be able to do much against Calzaghe. Of course I didn't expect the blowout and beatdown that Zaggs gave him, but I did expect a wide margin on the cards. Nobody agreed with me, and why would they......Lacy was undefeated (if inexperienced), had shown great power, stamina, had put on several great performances against fighters that should've given him at least a little trouble. He was expected to win by nearly everyone, and in very dramatic fashion, and nobody called him a joke, or a loser, until after the Calzaghe fight. Just goes to show you how fast **** will jump the **** off a sinking ship. He had an enormous fanbase amongst US boxing viewers before that fight, and you could've probably counted his fans after the fight on the fingers and toes of you and your immediate family.

Incidentally, I'm still a Lacy fan. Though I don't think he'll ever recover mentally from that fight, he has the toolbox, physically, to cause any super middle or light heavy today serious troubles if they're not very, very careful.

Tut, some cynical responses I see.

Kesslers finally only recently well regarded, because he held two titles has regained one and is widely regarded as the #2 SMW. You don't get there by being just plain good. It's not the strongest division but he's favored over any other SMW bar Calzaghe. And that's above Froch whom Taylor just ducked.

I'm surprised he gets more respect these days, but unfortunately only because euro fighters whom haven't faced so called big names often recieve too much scepticism on here. Sorry to say it, but it's true. So it's reassuring to see knowledgeable ppl on boxing aware that if he faced a top guy or name he would be favored to win or do well despite what some may think or want. Example being, a Kessler vs Pavlik matchup, and most usually favoring Mikkel.

There's school of thought on these boards which says hindsight is not allowed. That, regardless of whatever fact is staring us in the face, we should continue to believe whatever it is we previously believed.

Jeff Lacy has amounted to very little. Of course, anyone who watched him prior to Calzaghe probably wasn't that impressed. The hype he received beforehand was decidedly undeserved and a glaring example of US bias at its finest.

You may not believe it but Joe Calzaghe told me that he beat US fighters who were WAY better than Lacy, citing Sheika and Brewer as two examples. He doesn't think much of Jeff and, based on his post-performances, who can blame him?

Your best opponent is almost never your best performance. Why? Because that opponent is good, and hence, you yourself won't look as good. This is why resume, not performance, decides a fighter's stature. For all we know, Joe's best performance may have come in his first ten fights against subpar opposition. The worse the opponent, the better you look usually.

As for Mikkel Kessler, he has a ways to go. Until he beats an elite fighter, he isn't elite. Hell, he isn't that far off from Lacy to be honest. Hence, Bernard Hopkins, even the ancient version, is Joe Calzaghe's best win.

Yes, there were plenty of astute heads who saw how overrated Lacy was. I certainly saw it and several others I know. Message board posters don't represent the world. On this site, they don't even represent knowledgeable boxing fans.

Truth be told Kessler is average at best, and will remain so in my eyes until I see him against another elite fighter. Calzaghe is the only elite opponet on his record and he damn near got shutout in that fight. I just find him to be too robotic for my liking. He's got a good jab though.

O I agree. I didn't get a chance to put anything into the fight. I was out of the loop on that one. (Actually I just didn't really care). I was shocked out the outcome though. I wont sit here and say i would have picked Joe on winning. BUT I didn't like Lacy before or after Joe beat him. I don't actually know who I would have picked. Being an American and not really caring for either i would have probably picked Lacy without putting any thought in it. IDK. But yeah I know people jumped a big ship on lacy. I was not one. i would have been there first to tell you that you picked the right man if we had a bet on it. Did you make any money?????

How? Which boxing experts(besides yourself) gives Kessler the edge over Pavlik?
Kessler has NEVER been hit by a Pavlik type shot....can he take it? we saw Pavlik get up off the canvas and fight harder...what is Kessler made of? I'm sure you know! I've yet to see him deal with adversity in the ring....Joe hit the kid went a body shot that almost made him cry...imagine what a Pavlik shot would do to him!! Pavlik is the better ROBOT of the two....
