Heartless? Only a little more than two-hundred years ago (and less in some places like China) torture and execution were one of the main sources of entertainment among the masses. Killing of people was an everyday occurrence, and no one would even think to give a second thought to killing an animal. Simply because you were born into this age, where contrary values have been levied upon you since birth, doesn't give them some universal standing or superiority. Not that I condone what McClellan did (I personally find it distasteful), but that's the brutal reality of matters. There's a cultural and temporal relativity to everything.

There was no science whatsoever involved, so I fail to understand the criticism.

you are basically ruling out Morals because the "**** happened years ago" so it must be good right? life was ****ed up back then..there is no need to make it ****ed up today and call it normal, It's only when you succumb to it that it becomes normal.

If the animal was threatening the mans life, then you are right. Someone who adopts a dog, tapes his mouth shut, then feeds him to his pitbull belongs in Hell. It's not your place to decide whether an animal is expendable like that. Obviously you are a person of low moral values.
