A boxer can excel as a pro without a big amateur career and many have examples of guys who did. However, with that said, from my experience, if you have a choice...get some SERIOUS amateur background before you go pro. Look at it this way: Many can think of a guy who didnt have a deep amateur career but made it as a pro, true....but EVERYONE can think of ten successful guys who did both.Comment

I somewhat agree with you ICE. But the Mexicans are pretty darn successful with their program, most if not all known Mexican fighters did not have a long amateur background. I mean just look at the list of Chavez, Barrera, Morales, JMM, on and on.A boxer can excel as a pro without a big amateur career and many have examples of guys who did.
