Something that doesn't get much press about a potential Pavlik/Calzaghe fight

This is of course assuming Joe beats Roy, and for what its worth I think he stops the well past his prime version of RJJ (though I'll be pulling hard for old Roy), but as long as they fight at 168 or below than both of Calzaghes Ring Belts will be at stake since they make both limits. People forget that the weight divisions are caps. There is no minimum weight. A featherweight could fight for the heavyweight title without gaining a pound if he wanted to, someone would defend against him, and someone would sanction it.

Think about that for a second. If Joe were to win then nothing really changes. However, Pavlik is the middleweight champ. If he were to be the first to beat Joe Calzaghe, and Joe hadn't told the Ring to vacate any of his belts, than Kelly Pavlik would be the champ in three weight classes at the same time. That hasn't happened in 80 years.

Interesting point. I hadn't thought of that.

I was thinking about this the other day too. Assuming they fight at 168 (I don't think they will, I think it will be at a catchweight of 170), would that be the way it go? I don't know what Ring would do. If its a SMW bout would they really place the 175 belt on the line? I'm not sure they would.

RJJ has said before that he wants to unify the titles and a win over calzaghe would make him the top dog again - whats more it would give him a chance to get back at tarver or face the youn gun in chad dawson. RJJ has said before that he wantsto go back down and win the titles at what were his weights and he will go out for this fight - this is his last chance at a big name opponent.

Of course they would. Why wouldn't they? Their light heavyweight champ would be fighting under the 175 pound weight limit. His belt would be on the line. The light heavyweight division contains the super middleweight division. They aren't separate in that direction, though they are in the other.

If Pavlik beat Calzaghe at 170, he would be the 175lb champ and the 160lb champ, but Calzaghe would still be the 168 champ. That'd be a bit odd.

What if he beat him at 168? You think they'd give him the LHW belt too? I understand about the weight limits being limits, but somehow the image of that actually happening just doesn't seem to sit right with me. Winning the LHW belt while in a bout that places you in another weight class just doesn't seem right to me somehow.

Ray Leonard got the LHW belt when he fought Don Lalonde. But the fight was at a catchweight or 168 lbs.

That makes no sense. If they fought at 168 and not a lb higher, why wouldn't it be just for the SMW belt? If they fought above 168 but not above 175, then of course the LHW belt is up for grabs. I know sumthin like this happened wit Leonard-Lalonde but I can't exactly recall the circumstances.
