I'm a brit and i dont rave over calzaghe

Of course you cannot deny hes had a good career, winning all supermiddle weight belts, a belt in light heavy and 45 fights undefeated.

But i don't think hes the best fighter for a few reasons:

    1) He's welsh im english: This isnt why i dont like him but why i dont go 'COMMON TEAM GB KNOCK JONES OUT' i dont have any national pride for him, you're probably thinking 'england and wales are practically the same thing' but when football (or soccer) and rugby are on england and wales couldn't be further apart.

    2) His career: I generally dont like the way the shape of his career has gone, that might not be his fault (likely to be frank warrens) but its not as if warren had calzaghe locked in a cage for all those years, if calzaghe wanted real opponents he could have left. Simple. And then once hes got public interest he goes and picks on the old timers, in an attempt to make his career look more flashy. Gotta give him credit though for beating jeff lacy, apart from that most of his wins arent worth noting.

    3) His style: A cliché on this forum but he doesnt really box, but just throws his hands onto the opponent in an attempt to get points. The fundamentals of boxing are, 2 guys get in a ring, and win by punching eachother (in very simple words), so in my eyes calling him one of the greatest BOXERS of all time is an insult to some of the golden age boys.

    4) His attitude: 'Will you fight the undefeated pavlik?'
'Only if i get a truck load of money'
Now i can understand why he wants money for fighting dangerous opponenents, but it shows that his natural boxing spirit is rather poor, and he would rather a big payday than a noble legacy.

Now i would like to make this clear I DO NOT HATE CALZAGHE, he's a good fighter (not a boxer :P) but the whole point of this thread is to show american users that not all of britain think that our boxers are ring legends.

    Well done.

I just want people to know that I don't hate black athletes and have the uttermost respect for Damon Hill.

Ahahah ouch. I don't mind the guy, I just don't think he's on BHop's level, or Roy's, and it really bothers me that he acts like everyone ducked him when he would never leave his backyard and wanted ridiculous demands.

Quite a long list. He's definitely on their level Hopkins wasnt that past it, and Calzaghe is a bit past it already himself. Not saying he's better than prime Roy, but he's at that top level and always was.

As for leaving his own back yard, he's from Wales and has fought in England where he's had the crowd against him, Scotland, Denmark, America. 4, soon to be 5.

How many times has Hopkins fought outside his country, what 2, in a longer career. Loads are guilty of this, and don't give us the American mecca crap, 2 times is weak.

                  Kris,

On what basis can you claim Calzaghe is on the level of Jones?

On the basis he's an elite boxer, #1 at two weight divisions, and p4p #2 in the world.

By ON his level, that does not mean better than. It means around that level, to be competitive. Not saying he beats a prime Roy.
