ps. would he have to clean up the titles at ww to become linear champ? i know that there is no linear champ at ww, so how does one go about becoming linear champ in this instance?

I didn't say he was the man. I have him rated as the number one but Paul Williams clearly also has a claim to that title, but it won't truly be decided until they fight again in 2009. And yes their is no lineal champ because it retired with Floyd, so the only way to know is to unify, which I think someone will do in 2009 unless Berto avoids the big dogs but even then whoever has the other three would have the legit claim.

I love how when someone makes a nonsense claim thread like Williams sucks and Margarito never needs to fight him the Williams fans jump in as soon as possible, but when someone just states fact and a rational conclusion they are nowhere to be found. Can someone counter my argument, I really thought the title would be enough to draw people into a discussion but I guess they have nothing.

What about Goosen slating the bout for early 2009 though, it would just be another fight made along the way and on top of it, not replacing it. Any offer of about 2.5 million directly to him and not top rank would just about match it. I'm just saying I think he could make both bouts and make the Williams one even bigger.

you cant give margarito 2.5 million and not top rank when margarito is contractually a top rank fighter... it doesnt work like that

Thats the general nature of boards in general, the most rational discussion is often held to just a few posts, but the contraversial titles and outlandish accusations draw the most discussions with people throwing around a bunch of bull****. I can't stand how people are saying that Tony is ducking Paul Williams when it is simply not the truth.

1. First of all he is less than 14 days passed his biggest and toughest fight, having fought two of the heaviest punchers in the welterweight division, He is probably in a spot where he could take a less grueling fight as long as it is an acceptable welterweight champion or contender.

2. The money that Goosen is offering is most likely legitimate, but the 4 million would not be Margarito's purse, it would be the guaranteed amount for Top Rank for Margarito's services on the night, after which they would split the rest of the profit. So to break things down Margarito's final purse would not be 4 million, it would be a bit more than half of that which is a decent purse but he could make it elsewhere as well.

3. Margarito's team is talking about making a bout on November 1st which would actually not be a problem for making the Williams fight or even taking the Williams offer, because the Goosen offer would set the fight date in early 2009 which is still very doable.

My whole purpose was to point out that Margarito is not ducking Williams and I am certain they will fight again in early 2009 assuming they both keep their titles and maybe even claim a few more along the way. The Williams fight is definitely the fight we all want to see, but we will just have to wait a little bit longer than expected.

As i said before, margarito, just like mayweather, is weighing his financial options, this thread isnt about pitting one group of fans against another, its about explaining why margarito is doing what hes doing, for every 4 mayweather fans that jump on the williams bandwagon soley to spite margarito, there are 20 mayweather haters who are on the opposite spectrum and this thread doesnt stoop to that level. I think margarito and mayweather are doing the exact same thing, except this time, its margarito who is in the top billing position, and now he knows how it feels to have someone breathing down your neck offering you career paydays, the difference is this guy already beat him, which makes the situation that much more difficult.

I have a question for those who say Margarito is nothing and he's not that good. Fine let's say that's true. That leads me to my question.........Who has Paul Williams beat? Remember Margarito sucks so beating him doesn't mean anything......right? It comes down to "what have you done lately?" Fact is on July 26th Miguel Cotto was seen as the best welterweight in the world, not Paul Williams, and Margarito beat him. Margarito doesn't need PW. Clottey called out Marg, not PW. Mosley called out Marg, not PW. Even PW is calling out Marg. Why? Because he's the champ. That's just the way it is.

Didnt people accuse Mayweather of ducking Margarito based on the supposely "$8m", Didnt people argue that its impossible for Mayweather to make that sort of amount in a fight with Margarito?

Whats the difference here? Unless Margarito fights Dela hoya the williams payday still represent his biggest payday till date, And if they dont take the williams fight then i would say he did duck williams
