Is it bad to root for fighters of your nationality?!?

As boxing fans we should be able to support any fighter shouldn't we?

I find this nationalistic stuff really sad, especially USA vs UK. It's got ridiculous now, this should be the one place where respect is given to all good fighters.

Hey, that's entirely different. He's actually doing something to reach your market, aside from just being your color or what have you. He's actually reaching out to you on a deep level, something he'd have to TRY to actually accomplish/do. Completely different.

Doesn't make you any better or worse. It's all an accident.

I said nothing about wishing the best for someone being dangerous. I said keeping the truth. Don't misquote me.

When you act as if a fighter is better to watch strictly because he's of the same race as you, you're lying to yourself. It's not life-threatening. It's dangerous, however, in the sense that it limits you. Doesn't allow you to FULLY appreciate a great fighter of a different... sect.

One poster even said, 'He's Puerto Rican, but his favorite fighter to watch is a Mexican. However, if he fought a Puerto Rican, he'd root for the Puerto Rican.'

That makes no sense. Like who you like, and keep it moving.

The 'mistake' I was referencing, by the way is the 'chance' of you being born what you were is/was just as likely of you being born somewhere else as something else. The only constant is that you would (I'd have to assume), still be a boxing fan. So, like who you like for the right reasons. You enjoy watching them.

Not because you might be 17th cousins or some bull****.
i understand what you are saying and i agree with some of what you say but disagree with the others.

in boxing there is always a winner and a loser.

it is up to each person to decide who they want to win and who they'd rather see lose.

there are some fights where you can be indifferent and just watch it because you like boxing but the majority of the time there is always one you'd wish will win.

people can decide who they want to root for on a variety of things.

none of it is wrong. there have been times when there's 2 fighters fighting that are completely unknown to me. sometimes i just decide , "hey i like how the guy in red trunks looks and carries himself , i'll root for him to win."

rooting for someone based on race , nationality or even geography is normal and completely acceptable.

the nba or nfl is a good example. how do people pick their teams? generally the team in their area. if you poll a person who was raised in l.a. and the majority of time he's a lakers nba fan. if you poll a person in boston , the majority of time he's a patriots nfl fan.

if a guy says my favorite boxer is mexican but if he fights a puerto rican i'll root for the puerto rican. it's completely within his rights to do so.

that it makes sense to you is irrelevent. you pick who you root for and he'll pick who he roots for.

I kinda doubt that anyone can comprehend the meaning of belonging to a nation as tiny as mine and with the feel-good thing that we all share the same values (I don't know the correct word in english). But when a dane does well, which is very, very rare, it makes me proud. It's entirely different than when a country has 50 million ppl, or 80 mill. or 280 mill.

But on a personal level let me tell you that I hated the fact that Kessler lost to Calzaghe, but I certainly also could appreciate the excellent perfomance Joe gave. I can still appreciate watching a great fighter at work, even if it's my guy on the receiving end.

            it depends.

if you just say okay i'm welsh and i'm gonna root for joe because he's welsh that's fine.

now if you say i'm welsh and welsh boxers are superior to english boxers then you're just ******.

if you say i'm mexican and i'm proud of having so many mexican champions in boxing history that's fine.

now if you say i'm mexican and since we have more champions than puerto rican that means mexican boxers are better than puerto rican boxers then that's dumb.

i was the biggest barrera fan. i was a fan of manny's as well since the ledwaba fight. at that point in time i was more a barrera fan than a pacquiao fan.

but when barrera and pacquiao fought i rooted for manny because he was filipino. i thought barrera would win but i was hoping manny could at least be competitive or maybe even win.

it was up to me personally to decide who to root for. the guy who i was a fan of for a long time or the guy i was a fan of recently but is a countryman. i decided i wanted to see a filipino boxer do good. so even though i was sad that barrera loss , i was happy that someone who was born in the same country as i am won a huge fight.

I'm not going to argue about WHY people root for who they root for. That's not important. What I find sad is that they do it in the first place. That they can't just like someone or some team for that matter because of what skills that entity possesses is that truly bothers me.

Left Hook - Surely Barrerra-Pacquiao was a win-win for you. You either see your fave fighter win or your countryman. I understand how you feel - as someone who has roots in the UK and Italy, I have the same dilemma when England plays Italy at soccer.

As it happens, I live in a city with a population of 6 million, which makes me proud to be from HK. It's a small place really so if anyone makes it big - it's a really big deal. Just like Joe is a big deal for the Welsh and Kessler a big deal for the Danes. Maybe that kind of underdog feeling doesn't translate to a population of 250+ million?

                  that doesn't make sense , C.

there is no written rule for preference. people like who they like and people dislike who they dislike.

it's good for the sport. whether you are watching to see someone win or to someone lose , you are still watching and that's the most important thing.

the greatest part of our sport is watching someone you love beat the crap out of someone you hate.

whatever a person uses to decide who they love or hate is only relevent to that person.

you can't just root for someone because of skills. if that was the case then who would've rooted for margarito against cotto? who would ever have rooted against floyd or roy?

yes you can just sit there and say i'm watching this fight to see boxing skills but that's not very fan. then you're just a student of the sport and not a fun. a fan of the sport watches to see HIS guy win.

It makes perfect sense. I don't see the reason TO ROOT for someone, because they grew up near you. I understand that people do it and they have a right to. What I'm saying is, I think it's ******. Root for talent, not placement. Not because the person grew up near you, or is your race or nationality.

I watch this sport, to watch good fights. Neither fighter knows me and neither fighter gives a **** about me. So, I don't see the need to give a **** about the fighter. If my father needs a lung, I doubt either of the ****s in the ring are going to give a ****. So, why should I TRULY care if he loses. I prefer certain fighters, for stylistic reasons, and stylistic reasons alone.

Well, Personally i don't favour any Brit fighters. I don't even like a lot of Brit fighters tbh. I don't think supporting your country man is wrong, It's when you go overboard that it gets annoying that there is a problem.
