Is it bad to root for fighters of your nationality?!?

The problem is the xenophobic racism being displayed in the majority of threads. Me personally, I hold no real ties to any other country but america, so americans usually are going to get my support before anyone else.
My only confusion personally is take a guy like De La Hoya, completely embraced by american fans, fought on he US Olympic team, and while he holds citizenship to mexico as well, hes now a huge contributor to the US Olympic program, and is considered one of the greatest american fighters of this generation. Thus i consider him a mexican american, first and foremost, hes an american just like me, however i think sometimes with american fighters, you arent considered american seemingly on this board unless your black or white, everyone else gets to stake their claim in whatever country they want, even when they hold no real ties there other than where their parents or grandparents might have been born.Comment
i thought attila would be the next champ at heavy......
seriously.
when i saw him when he was just a prospect i was like this guy is gonna be good. when you looked at him you'd thought he'd be good. tall and atheltic , strong built.
maybe i got hyped up because angelo was his trainer......... then he disappeared.Comment
I am a mexican american and i back all the mexican fighters in boxing today. I love what they give to the sport. Real warriors. Is there anything wrong with this? I seen people get mad because mexicans root for margarito only because he is mexican. Along with Pacquiao with the filipinos, just some examples I dont get it. What is wrong with rooting and defending your nationality?Comment
Asikainen has his next fight in my hometown against Khoren Gevor this month...
I'm not sure if I'll go to watch it, but I will if he ever gets the world title shot that he has been talking about.
Those hopes were almost put to rest when he was KO'd by Sylvester in the rematch. Didn't look too great against Campas, although he got the stoppage win.
whatever happened to him?
Now he is back after three years.Last edited by TheGreatA; 08-06-2008, 03:38 AM.Comment

yeah its not a bad thing....i support the UK fighters but its all well and good supporting them as long as u can give objective arguments, for example im a joe calzaghe fan BUT i can freely admit he hasnt fought the best competition over the years (mainly due to warren lol) and i love ricky hatton but i was no fool and knew floyd would be too good for him (i still suported him obviously)
but when people are blindly biased it annoys me...like vvlad owns for example...the guy has opinions on everyones fighters...but if someone says vvlad isnt as good as he thinks and puts a decent argument forward..they must be wrong and cant have an opinion against him..that kinda of bias annoys me!
nothing wrong with being patriotic tho!Comment
The trouble with rooting with/for a nationality or race is because you are, what you are..... by mistake.
I know people don't like to think this way, but it's true. You could have just as easily have been born Black in the Bronx as Mexican in Mexico.
So, to root for something that is essentially that trivial, is insane. You can like a certain style, certain fighters. But only because they happen to 'look like you', that means you are blind to the truth.
Anytime you deny people the truth, it's dangerous.Comment
