Toney is a legend. He is as good, and slick as is claimed. He is what a great boxer is. If you don't think he is or appreciate than your missing the boat, and what the sport is about. **** his weight, or the steroids. At the end of the day he is a boxers boxer, and a legend.
James Toney is overrated

Toney is/was a very, very good fighter, I'm not sure if he's an ATG but he had great skills.
I thought he won both Griffin fights but the first one was close, the second I thought he won clearly.
And Jones wasn't dominating Griffin in their first fight, he was getting frustrated by Griffin.Comment

Leaving aside Jones outstanding skill my take is that there is little really to separate these sets of boxers. In fact you could even argue that the British trio actually fought more top class opposition in their careers (each other, and throw in Watson) than did the US guys, who faced each other once at most. What do you think?Comment

Roy was clearly having trouble with Griffin in their first fight. He was just starting to solve him when he got DQ'd.Comment

I really don't consider James Toney to be an all-time great.
Look at all those losses on his record. He was schooled by Roy Jones, much the same way that Lacy was schooled by Calzaghe.
He lost twice to Montell Griffin, who was easily dominated twice by Jones (although in the first fight Jones got DQ).
Yes, Toney moved up those weight divisions, but he was caught cheating with steroids twice. If he really is an all-time great, why did he need steroids? He's probably is a natural super-middleweight or light-heavyweight, but he's had to move up higher because he isn't smart enough to control his weight.Comment

And look at how easily Jones destroyed Griffin in the second fight. Toney struggled with this guy?Comment
