*DISCLAIMER*- This is by NO means a flame or bait thread. I just want to take this time to SERIOUSLY look at the fight and the reasons why I (not you or anyone else) believe Miguel lost the fight on Saturday Night.
Reason #1. Gameplan
Going into any BIG fight, one has to have a strategy, a game plan. Not just a game plan, but one that FITS your opponent. This takes time and preparation, much training and film study of your opponent. Now I believe that Team Cotto studied Marg, but I don't think they had the RIGHT game plan to beat him. Yes Cotto boxed and moved and landed some GREAT, FLUSH shots to the head, but WHERE WAS THE BODY WORK???????!!!!!!! I think that was his FIRST mistake, he did NOT dig to the body and Marg had his legs the entire fight, which helped him in the second half of the fight.
Reason #2. Defense
Personally, I see this as Miguel's BIGGEST weakness. From 140 to now, he has been hit easily and hurt too much for a fighter of his caliber. They say in other sports that defense wins championships and that hold true to boxing as well! Everyone can deliver a shot, but everyone CAN'T take a shot. In the second half of the fight, that is what I saw. Marg was NOT hitting Miguel with DEVASTATING shots, but they added up and lead to Miguel's demise. Miguel HAS to tighten up his defense, or he will find himself hurt against the better guys in the sport.
Reason #3. Stamina
I know for a fact that Miguel trained hard for this fight! He looked great. He looked prepared. But down the stretch, he began to tire. In this sport a champion or challenger HAS to be prepared for ANY AND EVERYTHING! Every fight is NOT going to be over in 4 rounds or even 8, therefore one has to be in TIP-TOP SHAPE! Miguel ran out of gas from all of the moving that he did (which was smart) and it cost him in the second half of the fight. On the contrary, his opponent, never SEEMED to have tired and capitalized on Miguel's fatigue.
Conclusion
Hope this isn't too long, but this why I believe that Miguel lost on Saturday night. Can he come back and be champion..YES he can. I just hope this lost does not effect him too bad mentally. Boxing is a tough sport and ONLY the strong survive when the bell rings. My hats are off to Miguel for a great fight. Dig in NSB...
