Miguel Cotto Proved He Isn't An Elite Fighter

The only time Cotto was in trouble was when he was against the ropes, so why stay there? Doesn't make any sense, he went there on his own, sometimes to rest, but if thats the only time youre getting hurt, common sense says to not go there. Cotto should have added the hold into his repertoire from early on as part of his gameplan, like P. Will did against Margarito. You cant wait till the late rounds to hold because the ref wont let you get away with it, he will think youre doing it because youre hurt or tired. Elite fighters are cerebral, meaning they use their brain as much as their boxing ability, Miguel Cotto is not there yet.

Miguel's boxing skills are good, but they were starting to be overemphasized. They obviously weren't THAT good to stay away from the damn ropes and get battered in the later rounds..

Nope, Cotto's problem is that he believes in his power too much. All of the punches he threw were hard punches, taking too much strength and stamina out of him. He was the better boxer, so common sense says to just box and score points, you dont need to make every punch a hard one, just box, jab but dont make every single punch a hard one, thats because he believes in his power too much.

Wrong, Vernon Forrest isnt elite, boxing is more than boxing ability. Shane has never been smart in the ring, just quick and strong. Cotto outsmarted Shane and won.

Cotto is great boxer, I'd say an elite boxer, no doubt about that... his only problem was that he ran into the brick wall that was Margarito's head/chin. Cotto hit Margarito w/ so many head shots, I was amazed how Margarito didn't even stumble. That's props to Margarito. I just thought that Cotto would have gone more to the body like he is known for, but it seemed to me he was head hunting. Margarito had the perfect plan, and carried it out brilliantly. He did take his huge share of punishment though. I didn't think he'd beat Cotto, let alone make his corner throw in the towel. I thought Cotto would have been able to survive that round if not had been for Evangilista throwing in the towel. I can't wait for a rematch, well, I will be praying for a rematch. This fight lived up to it's hype. Great fight, great night for boxing.

I think he showed he was elite actually. Even in defeat. Margarito is just a machine.
