Jeff Lacy's Issues With Golden Boy Led To Retirement

It appears the recent retirement announcement by former champion Jeff Lacy was caused by a dispute with his promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions. He said the money that was offered for the bout with Jermain Taylor, for November 15 on HBO, was an insult. Lacy told the Tampa Tribune that he was offered $500,000 to fight Taylor. After he faced Epifanio Mendoza on Wednesday and almost got knocked out on route to winning a majority decision, the money was only raised to $550,000, an amount far less than what Lacy had expected. Lacy needs Taylor more than Taylor needs him, Lacy's career is going down while Taylor is probably more popular than ever, a win over Taylor for Lacy would mean he's still a pretty good fighter, a win over Lacy for Taylor doesn't mean much.

This just proves to me that Lacy doesn't even think he has recovered from the Calzaghe fight and is just trying to fight for the money.

I forgot to add, considering where his career is at the moment, that's not a bad offer IMO and I doubt he'd get a better offer against anyone else.

He hasn't been the same since that loss, no convincing victories. I personally don't see whats wrong for fighting for money? He is a pro and seems to be thinking sensibly. When risk out weighs reward maybe its time to hang up the gloves.

That looks like good money for a guy comming off lackluster performances against sub/par opposition, to tell you the truth I could care less if I ever see Lacy fight again. He seems like a nice enough guy but he's calling boxing "Dirty" just because his promoters made a deal that looks fair??

Was he expecting a Million dollar payday on PPV??

You had a good career, good ridance Lacy.

Why the hell would JT "need" Lacy.

Seems like a pretty pathetic reason to retire from boxing **** me, retiring because he isn't happy with the figures in his next fight.

More like he is retiring because he struggled to legitimately beat a low level fighter.

                Think about it Jeff

What else is Jeff Lacy going to get paid 500k to do?

He is on the slide and the only way to get a big money fight at this stage is to build his name back up and if that means taking the smaller piece of the pie than thats what he has to do.

I hope he saved most of his prize money because he won't earn that kind of cash in a 9 to 5

considering his performance lately, a half-million dollar payday is ridiculous.

                  ridiculously awesome that is.

lacy's crazy to turn it down.

surely if he actually believes he can and will beat jermain taylor he should go into the fight earning hes 550 grand looking at the bigger picture. win this hes back on the market for the bigger paydays and potential world title shots.
