Why is Danny Jacobs still fighting tomato cans?

The guy is 21 years old. He had 144 amateur fights, where he had a spectacular 137-7 record. He won two consecutive national golden gloves championships and then the U.S. amateur MW cship. He just fought his 8th pro fight and they match him with a guy who'd lost 7 straight fights, 4 of them by KO/TKO. Why are they bringing him along so soft?

He stepped up tonight and he only has like 10 fights. He finally fought a guy with a winning record and has been fighting every month.

They really need to step up his level of opposition, at least get a few rounds in and if he did have 134 amateur fights how can he have a 137-7 record?

          He's not Gamboa?

he's been pro for less than a year. the total amount of fights doesn't really matter. 8-0. Ok, he's still young.

with that being said after tonight I'd start to pick up the pace as far as level of opponents go, he's clearly ready for better opponents. Just be smart about it, he's young.

Gamboa hasn't been fighting much longer, but his competition is a hundred times better than Jacobs'.

The guy he fought tonight was 20 lbs past his best weight class and soft as a donut. They're just padding his record, and it isn't going to help him develop.

Thanks for catching the error. 144 fights, I just edited my post. Yeah, I just think blowing all of these cans out in the first round is great for the hype and all, but it doesn't do much as far as preparing him for a title shot, which he should be looking for in about a year, year and a half.

Gamboa has more experience and is 26 years old. Gamboa is also much more skilled then Jacobs at this point as well.
