    Jirov-Toney revisited

Watched this one again tonight. Probably the best fight in the history of the cruiserweight division. I believe it was runner up to Gatti-Ward III for fight of the year for 2003. Anyway, on to what I found noteworthy.

A lot of people, including Harold Lederman, thought this fight was close. It wasn't. If you want proof of how bad a judge Lederman is, here's your proof. Toney completely dominates round 5, yet Jirov wins it on his card. Lampley and Steward even go on and on about how Toney crushed Jirov in the round, yet Lederman comes right on and says Jirov wins it with "aggression." LOL. Lampley later claims Jirov "dominates" round 11, yet moments later he reads off the punch stats only to calmly say that Toney landed 6 more punches. Plus Toney's punches were worlds better in that round. I scored it 117-109 as did TWO of the judges. The other judge had it 116-110. I gave Toney everything from round 5 on. I was watching it and scoring and thinking, "No way did I think this was this lopsided back in 2003." Guess I was letting the commentators influence me then. Hard to believe such a great, great fight was that lopsided, but it was.

The other thing I wanted to mention was how great round 12 is. I have never heard a commentator freak like Steward did during the last minute.

      Great great great fight.

I still have Holyfield vs. Qawi a bit higher for entertainment but it was amazing.

I don't think lederman was always bad, but this fight he was terrible. And lately he's been terrible in the same we. Sometimes Harold, like a lot of posters on this site, score for INEFFECTIVE aggression. This fight is a prime example of that.

Also Jirov was awesome to watch. I wish he hadn't gone to heavyweight and ruined himself. I was always a fan of that guy. Great heart. Toney was amazing in this fight.

I thought it was pretty close, it depends on what you like as a judge, the activity of Jirov or the precise punching of Toney. Toney sealed the deal in the last round.

I thought Holyfield-Qawi 1 was better, Steward freaked during the 9th round of Gatti-Ward as well.

Haven't seen it, but damn, do I really want it.

Do you remember when Ward landed that four punch combination on Gatti's head (all were hooks from both hands) when Gatti's hands were touching his knees (yeah for Gatti's defense!)? Steward was like yelling random noises because he was so excited.

Was he more excited than he was for that round? I can't imagine he was, but... if he was, then I REALLY need to get this fight.

I think Steward freaked so much in this one because Toney finally landed the punch Steward had spent the whole fight calling for. I mean I don't see the big deal since Roy called the fight ending punch just about every time he commentated. I remember Roy saying Hopkins would knock Allen down with a straight right moments before it happened. I also remember him saying Tito would KO Mayorga with a body shot in the 2nd or 3rd round. Tito finally did it in the 8th.
