Edison Miranda: why so highly rated?

First let me say that I'm not a 'hater'. I don't hate any boxer and I always view fights objectively. I can't for the life of me understand why Miranda is so highly rated though. Sure, a record of 30-2 is nothing to be sniffed at, but having watched 5 of his fights, he looks far from the 'beast' people speak of.

His best victories are against Howard Eastman and Allan Green, both respectable, but whenever he's faced top talent (Abraham and Pavlik) he has looked several classes below. A combination of the worst defence I've ever seen on a top level boxer, wildly inaccurate punches and disgusting tactics. All he seems to have is power and a decent chin.

I don't understand why he is so rated around these parts. I've read posts saying he'll beat Kessler or Abraham in their rematch. Why people have come to that conclusion I have no idea. Christ, I'd even give Carl Froch the edge.

    Anyone have any ideas why?

Maybe people just like him. He's entertaining, has a good personality and he's always fun to watch.

And picking Miranda over Abraham isn't all that crazy. If you saw the first fight you know it was close.

He's a beast, entertaining, very respectful of the sport, and came from absolutely nothing - one of the most downtrodden backgrounds of any fighter, which is saying a lot.

Yeh, I can understand why he's popular, but what I'm asking is why is he highly rater as a boxer?

I don't rate him as a boxer, he's a one dimentional exciting slugger. He brings the big KO's and then gets overhyped happens with alot of fighters who can punch.

He's definitely not the most technical fighter out there, but he has that power that can turn a fight quickly. The first Abraham fight was close so think that he can beat him isnt' too far fetched.

Because he looks good knocking bums out. When he gets in with a world class opponent, he falters. His style will end his career in a few years. He will beat the other bums up until he loses to a top guy, and claim weight issues. The reason i get on this gy because he is complaining that the first fight should've been stopped. lol
What the heck is that about? He was wobbled in the first fight, and exposed as a slugger with no technical skills to ever beat the elite fighters. Mayorga was the same way, except he had a ref in denkin who actually stopped his fight with forrest, because forrest didn't answer a question lol. Miranda's days are numbered. When he loses this fight, he will go to lightheavy, when he loses there, he'll go to cruiser, and finally heavy.

I agree that power punching prospects/contenders are often overrated, because they look so impressive destroying bums...

BUT, didn't Miranda almost double Abraham's punches landed? The scores were close and Miranda got 5 points taken off. I doubt he looked several classes below in anything but being able to keep composure in the ring.

It's interesting how Miranda got points taken off because even though in Germany, the ref was Randy Numan, an American ref who was actually a good ref in Marquez vs Vasquez 3.
