Floyd Mayweather Jr - He Does Right By Boxing

By Jake Donovan - Perhaps your stance is that he retired at the right time – on top, with his faculties still intact and bank account stuffed to the gills. Maybe you’re among those disappointed that he leaves the game without defending his linear crown against the world’s best welterweights. Or maybe, you don’t believe that he’s done for good, that the right fight - and more specifically, the right price to go along with it – lures him back into the ring.

Regardless of your stance, there’s no denying that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s sudden retirement announcement comes at a perfect time for the welterweight division and boxing as a whole.

The news came about early Friday afternoon, preceding an already active boxing weekend that included two major fight cards and the annual Hall of Fame inductions in Canastota. Yet with so much going in on the sport, the major talk surrounded Money May, who hasn’t fought since last December and quite possibly will never fight again.

Should Mayweather decide to make it stick, his departure leaves vacancies galore. A new opponent is now needed for Oscar de la Hoya’s reserved September 20 PPV date. A new name will now appear atop the pound for pound rankings. Hopefully, a new welterweight champion can be crowned in the near future. [details]

Lost Legacy

I Think Mayweather Is Definitely Messing Up His Legacy Or Chance At A Great Legacy By Not Fighting And Beating Fighters Like Margarito And Cotto....he's Been Ducking Those Fighters And Its Gotten To The Point Where I Believe He's Tired Of True Boxing Fans Calling Him Out On That Fact So He Will "retire', Not Even Sure If He Will Stay Retired After His Last Joke Of A Retirement...a True Champion Would Fight All The Great Fighters In His Division And Then Retire But Hey It Is His Legacy To Ruin If He's Content Leaving All This Unfinished Business And What If's Then So Be It

Mayweather retiring is very disappointing. I can see why Lennox Lewis retired before fighting Wlad, but Floyd retiring before fighting Cotto? That's just lame. I hope he doesn't pull a Trinidad by retiring young, then come back 5 years later when he has nothing left.

Mayweather did the right thing. He stepped aside and let the real fighters come out to play. No more excuses, no more bull**** about PPV #'s and record sales like this was the ****ing music industry. There is no Nielsen Soundscan to rate a boxer by. His performance in the ring should tell all.
