I think people don't understand the evolution of boxing as it progresses. Yes, Sugar Ray Robinson may have been the best of his time, but that doesn't make him capable of beating people from now just because of that.

Training, technique, athleticism, knowledge, etc. -- all of that has evolved and grown. This is why it's ****** to compare present fighters to past fighters.

Anyway, just wanted to let that out. Now I'll let a bunch of people come in here and tell me how I am wrong and hug SRR's nuts a little bit more even though half of them have probably never seen him fight, but they think the world of him anyway (despite his being a total douchebag outside of the ring).

Andrew Golota would probably KO Joe Louis. That doesn't mean Louis is overrated. It means people are larger now, and steroids happen, and so do advanced training methods, better equipment, nutrition, etc.

I've always felt the same way. Though there may be certain intangibles the older fighters have over present day fighters such as mental and physical toughness from the way things were.

I disagree. The tapes I've seen of Robinson and Pep show they are great fighters and could hang with them. I think some of the sluggers back then would get beat, but even a fighter like Charley Burley seemed very elusive, great defense, and a nightmare for anyone.

Truly great fighters would have been great in any era. Give them modern diets, medication, and training to go with their skills and they would excel now too.

That takes all the fun out of the "fantasy" part though too... and it's not as clear cut in the lower weight divisions...

Aye, a good chunk of the modern heavyweights stand a chance against the heavies of yester year given their size alone. There are some exceptions, but especially when you hit back in the 60's and earlier.
