i cant call it exactly ducking because they already fought twice, but robinson did avoid the rubber match with basilio.
carmen said that he pushed for the fight, and it went to the negotiation table, and when the deal was about to be done, ray didnt want to sign the contracts.
whether it was because of ray's demands, or the fact he didnt want to go through hell again, is anyone's guess. But i know for a fact that carmen really wanted to settle the score.Comment

Robinson never ducked no one. It was money reasons and it was 1 fighter. The only person Sugar had left to fight was GodComment

Burley was quite boring to watch and one of his fights actually ended in a no contest because of the lack of action.
He was like Mayweather but in a different era where the "Margarito's" were appreciated and the "Mayweather's" were avoided.
I'm not surprised that Robinson said he was too 'pretty' to fight Charley Burley if he was watching one of Burley's less entertaining fights. But Burley was a great boxer and beat great fighters although he never won the title (because he never got a shot at it).
The fight on youtube is against a quite bigger opponent, so it's kind of natural to see waiting on a counterpuncher side.
Certainly Robinson knew that regardless of how hard the fight would have been, he would not shine as much as he would have against a brawler/slugger type.Comment

I didnt know Burley was considered boring, but I am not well read as some other users here, the reports I read do not seem to indicate a negative fighter like Jimmy Bivins. Also I think the fight you refer to was against Willliams, who was a defensive slickster, so the blame should at least be shared IMO.

I don't think Burley was necessarily 'boring' but with his defensive, counter punching style, speed and power, he was a very hard opponent to figure out.
It's no wonder that Robinson did not fight Burley when he could choose to fight someone like LaMotta who would bring the fight to him and do that for more money.
And yes, the no contest between Burley and Williams was as much Holman Williams' (another very good, avoided fighter of the era) fault as it was Burley's.
They fought each other seven times and aside from that one bout (which was their sixth), they had many more entertaining fights (particularly the fourth) which kept the crowd coming back for more.
"Ray ducked me. George Gainford (Ray's manager) admitted that much. But, I can't say I blame him. There wasn't no money in us fighting each other. All we would have done is knock each other off."
"You know, to me the most remarkable thing about Ray's career is that he didn't even get a shot at the welterweight title til he was 26- or the middleweight title til' he was 30! You think he was the greatest? What do you think he'd a been if he'd gotten his chances when he deserved them? You wanna know the truth? If I coulda' got my shot, I wouldn't have risked it fighting someone like Ray."Last edited by TheGreatA; 06-03-2008, 04:15 PM.Comment

Wow, I never read that, thanks.
What an awesome fight would have been Robinson-Burley by the mid 40s (and none of them would have had a belt on, sad). That whole crew never getting their shots, or getting them way too late is one of the worse things in boxing history.
It's kind of amazing that fighters like La Motta, Burley acknowledge the business side of boxing but the keyboard heroes on this board don't.
EDIT: is there footage of Holman Williams?Comment
