MMA promotes to americans, Boxing promotes nationality/race

So what exactly are you saying then?? U said MMA is doing well because it promotes americanism as opposed to ethnic pride. Well boxing could definitely do the same but they dont because they have a wider fanbase than a few powerhouse countries and ethnic nationalism in boxing is promoted the same way soccer does for the world cup.Comment

My point is, mma reaches out to casual fans through promotion of its fighters by not draping a flag over them but rather promoting them as the newest and up and coming stars in their sport, as opposed to trying to appeal only to the specific ethnic group within the country. MMA tries to crossover in their promotion, boxing when it comes to non english speaking fighters, the promoters dont really do this.So what exactly are you saying then?? Ok... well my counterpoint is that boxing accomplishes the same task BECAUSE of the nationalism. And they take that approach because they have a much wider fanbase worldwide than mma. It just doesnt have the same appeal in the US that it used to in the days of guys like Gerry Cooney. How many casual filipino fans that knew nothing of boxing became devoted lovers because they tuned into 1 Pacquiao fight? Panamanians to Duran? Argentians to Baldomir? Welsh to Calzaghe??My point is, mma reaches out to casual fans through promotion of its fighters by not draping a flag over them but rather promoting them as the newest and up and coming stars in their sport, as opposed to trying to appeal only to the specific ethnic group within the country. blackjesus, im sorry but you don't know the history of boxing if this is the type of stuff that gets you rattled about the sport.
How did the espn boxing ppv do? It was marketed to Americans as you'd like, in boxing ppv terms it failed. We havn't gotten another one.
Promoters and tv, sell to the person purchasing the ppv or to the ones watching the boxing match on regular tv. Most are spanish speakers or of spanish decent, so they get targeted.
Whats wrong with boxng? people saying theres so many things wrong, thats whats wrong. Of course it can be better.
Truth mma is so popular because most of its stars are white. Did you know that boxing used to be the #1 sport in boxing at one time? Did you also know that during that time Whites were dominating, or at least competing at the very high level.Comment

[QUOTE=Black Jesus;3566562]Why would a white man in missouri care about miguel cotto when hes being promoted exclusively as the next puerto rican sensation, as opposed to the next boxing sensation?
Appealing to races is whats hurting our sport majorly, instead of building up a reigonal fanbase and promoting say, latin fighters,..... QUOTE]
I am white and from Missouri. The Cotto-Margarito fight makes me drool. In ALL sports, most of the time I will root for an American over a non-countryman, there is nothing wrong with that. It is also completely okay for mexicans/latinos/brits to pull for their home fighters over other nations. This isn't "We are the world, we are the children." This boxing/sport and people always have/always will pull for their regional fighters/athletes.Comment
You are right, however i dont think boxing in the united states among casual americans will ever really have appeal among our casual fans again for a long while.Ok... well my counterpoint is that boxing accomplishes the same task BECAUSE of the nationalism. I cant just put it on whites, since in the 90's with de la hoya, trinidad, tyson, chavez, bowe, holyfield, lewis etc boxing was still popular without a heavy white presence. MMA markets those white fighters, yes, but that wouldnt explain the popularity of a guy like anderson silva.Comment
I disagree. I bet you anything that if the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world was american there would be water cooler convos about boxing at your office. Kelly Pavlik is quickly becoming the next great white hope. The guy keeps coming back and knocking fools out after being downed himself by guys like miranda and taylor. If he keeps getting dramatic wins like that he'll be the closest thing to a real life rocky balboaComment

I dont think pavlik is a white hope, hes legit, he doesnt need to be a "hope" because hes basically already there. One thing i will say is that pavlik gets pretty good mainstream attention certainly.
You are right about the heavyweight champion thing, however, i dont even see a real undisputed heavyweight king right now let alone an american one.Comment
