What do people get so excited over fighters "calling out" other fighters?

If you're a big name, everyone's gonna want to fight you for the payday and exposure. People are always yapping about how Miguel Cotto needs to "call out" Floyd Mayweather, but he's already insulted him in the press several times. It's not all that important anyway.

The negotiating table is where it matters, not your post-fight interview.

The "calling-out" in interviews is sometimes just hype for a fight that was probably gonna happen anyway.

People talking about "Hatton called out Mayweather, so the fight happened!"

Nevermind that Ray Hatton later said that they'd been in negotiations with Team Mayweather for 18 months.

It really is what is the challenger willing to give up at the negotiating table to get the champ in the ring.

If a challenger really wants to fight the champ they have to make concessions until the champ agrees. Short money, glove size, ring size, wieght, location, upfront money for the champ or whatever else the champ wants if the challenger is not willing to make the sacrifices to make the fight happean they do not want it enough.

If Hatton wasn't a big draw, his calling out Floyd would have fallen on deaf ears. The people who claim that Cotto needs to call out Floyd make me the most sick. That is such a pathetic excuse for a fight not happening.

Didn't Ray Hatton said this fight had been in the making for 18 months? As in just hyped?

Were they actually in negotitations for 18 months. That puts them back at June 2006. Why didn't they fight at 140 before then? How long does it take to negotiate a fight?

Cotto is going to do what he's going to do. Eventually it'll probably include fighting Mayweather. All he really needs to do is keep winning and raising his profile. The fight with Mayweather is going to make business sense eventually. There's no point in him acting ass because he's not one.

              http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/oth...confirmed.html

Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather have been planning their Las Vegas super-fight on December 8 for the past 18 months, Hatton's father Ray admitted Thursday.

Contracts were finally signed Wednesday for the welterweight showdown between the two unbeaten stars which will yield a combined purse of almost $35 million.

But Ray Hatton revealed officials from both camps had been locked in negotiations since shortly after Ricky Hatton defeated Carlos Maussa in Sheffield in 2005.

I do wish that Hatton and Witter would've fought each other in the UK, at some point in their careers.

Yeah, it's the carnival aspect of boxing. They see how popular it is in wrestling and make a show of it.
You never see the Yankees calling out the Red Sox, or Real Madrid calling out Manchester United, or the Celtics calling out the Lakers.

It's theatre, plain and simple. I don't think most fighters give a **** about who they fight if the money is right for them.

                    Bump.

I would like to know why people make such a big deal out of fighters "calling out" other guys, like it means a whole lot.
