Beating a bum doesn't make you number #1. Cotto needs Mayweather to establish himself.Margarito is just overrated "Warrior".

To me this is a lose lose situation for cotto. People will keep down playing him if he wins or if he loses. Haters are haters... Regardless of how he wins or better yet who ever wins of these two fighters should be given the respect of the boxing world. They had the balls to step up and fight all commers, weak or champions, they gave no excuses and faught who they needed to fight. I can't say the same for Floyd. Is Floyd good yes some may even say great, on paper he's untouchable in a class of his own, but as a boxing fan you can't fool me. See whats happening here is people keep down playing Floyds actions by minimizing Cottos and any other ww accomplishments to keep Floyd pound for pound and to keep him on top. Sorry guys in my book your only as good as your competition. You fight the best to be the best, you beat the best to be great.

Are you really saying that Margarito beating Cotto would be the biggest upset since Douglas beat Tyson?

I think Cotto is going to KO Margarito. I've never thought too much of Margarito other than he's just a tough guy. I think that as long as Mayweather continues to fight he should fight Cotto eventually. But I don't think a win over Margarito legitimizes that. I think Cotto should just keep winning against good opposition and eventually leave Top Rank when his contract expires. Then he'll be able to fight Mayweather.

At some point you have to acknowledge that when Floyd Mayweather beat Chicanito Hernandez, Angel Manfredy, Topo Gerena, Justin Jukko, Jesus Chavez, Diego Corrales, Famoso Hernandez, Jose Luis Castillo, etc. he was taking on all comers and beating some hall of famers in the process. We have to agree on that before this is going to go anywhere because if you don't agree with that then you're just framing the argument based on half truths just to serve your biased purpose.

If we can agree on that then we can say that Floyd is now fighting only high profile bouts against whoever has a name, some recognition and brings money to the table. He's not fighting Ricky Frazier, Richard Hall or the bouncer at the club. He's also being judged as a welterweight. Keep that in mind. How many linear 130 lb. champions do you know who moved up to welterweight late in their careers and took on all-comers?

That said, Cotto is a fight that should happen, but to act like Floyd never took on all-comers, never fought great champions, never took any risky fights or never EARNED universal respect from the boxing community is either disingenuous or naive.
