I laugh at you dumbasses that are on here saying that Zag's is a top ten ATG. Really, did you clowns start to watch boxing 5 years ago, or something?

abadger - there is a lot of good information and interpretation in your original post. However you spend no time answering the questions calzaghe's critics might have.

Eg. why after beating Lacy so comfortably did Joe face an unheralded sakio bika and waste a voluntary defence on manfredo before facing kessler, hopkins, tarver etc?

why did he not travel to the US in search of the big fights earlier?

why did he fight so many weak defences against the tocker Pudwills and evans ashiras of the world?

i'm not for a moment saying that these questions don't have answers that support the view of calzaghe as a great modern fighter, but if you just skirt over them then, as a piece of journalism, you have an unbalanced article.

Whining? No son, you giving me red k is like your mom giving a whale a tic-tac.
No, red k is a bitches move, son. You need to learn this. Kinda of a knee jerk reaction to something to don't agree with, but don't have the brains, or the balls to respond to.
I think Zags is a hell of a fighter. But your cawk smoking of Zags is ****ing LAUGHABLE. You call me a *****? **** it, I dub thee a ZAG-***.

Joe C gets what props he does get for beatin younger, undefeated champs in Lacy and Kessler that were supposed to whomp him. The Hopkins win wasn't that impressive but it still gives him anotha big name on his resume. Other than that no one really cares about all the fights he won in Europe for years against guys nobody really knows, except Eubank and Reid.

Sorry, I do my best to answer when I can, but the initial set of responses was nothing more than the usual insults and contained no questions at all. I'll go back and look through again, but for the moment I'll deal eith the points you raise:

Eg. why after beating Lacy so comfortably did Joe face an unheralded sakio bika and waste a voluntary defence on manfredo before facing kessler, hopkins, tarver etc?
Well, thats boxing! Not every fight is a superfight and it is unrealistic to expect certain fighters to be having them every fight. Show me the man who does. I don't like it any more than you but it is the way it is. Anyway, Bika is as credible a 'tune-up' defence as you could have and the Manfredo fight, far from being wasted was taken solely in order to boost Joe's mainstream profile in the States, using Manfredo's Contender based fame to boost Joe's US marketability. It worked too, because Joe is now making the fights you describe and I don't see that that one fight and extra few months makes much difference to the value of them.

why did he not travel to the US in search of the big fights earlier?

why did he fight so many weak defences against the tocker Pudwills and evans ashiras of the world?
I would have liked Joe to make the big US fights earlier too, and it is a valid criticism of him, but I don't think it undermines his credibility. Jones was a p4p guy who had moved up to LHW before Joe even won his world title, same with Toney. Hopkins rose to prominence only in 2001 and even then was a weight below Joe, so the fight was never really a goer. Tarver began to make his name around the same time that Joe did, in the early 2000s and only becoming a real 'name' when he fought Jones in 2003. It is not as though these superfights were really out there for Joe for most of his career, although people like to believe they were. Even in the period that it cpuld be argued that they were say 2003 onwards, it has to be remebered that Joe himself had no real 'name' profile on which to get these fights in the US and was the opposite of a decent risk/reward fighter for any of the big names under discussion.

People talk as if these fights could be made at the click of someone's fingers, and also seem to exclusively blame Joe for not making them, but thats not a fair and accurate assesment. The risk/ reward factor, Joe's lack of US profile and also just the fact that Calzaghe was a UK boxer were all significant impediments to these fights happening. In fighting Lacy and Kessler when they emerged I think Joe showed he wanted the big fights and was prepared to take them, as I said, those fights were the ones that overcame the problems I've described and forced Joe undeniably into the US scene.

As for the 'weak defences', well some were weren't. All fighters do it and both you and I know this, so I don't think there is much more that needs to be said.

Hope that answers some of the questions!

You're talkin, but you ain't sayin nothin. And Joe's fightin, but he ain't gettin nowhere.
If you compare his resume to your boyfriend Mayweather, then Calzaghes resume doesn't look half-bad. Fighting tiny midget fighters like hatton, and before koing hatton talking about how tiny of a midget hatton is and cracking jokes. Floyds resume is no better then Calzaghe, so quit your racial hating you ****
