As much as the Brits like to believe otherwise, Calzaghe is just not an elite fighter. Here are the top 5 wins of his career:
-Hopkins: Barely beat a washed up fighter who is 43-years-old and a good 7 years past his prime. Watch the Hopkins that beat Trinidad and the one that fought Taylor and Calzaghe and the difference is clear.
-Kessler: A solid, but clearly unproven fighter. Much like Calzaghe, he has built up his record in one of the weakest divisions in one of boxing. He is just as unproven as Calzaghe.
-Lacy: Overhyped. The only reason people thought Lacy had a chance is because Calzaghe hadn't fought anyone of note at this point.
-Eubank: Another washed up name that was way past his prime, much like Hopkins.
-Reid: Solid contender, but certainly not world class. He was the victim of a gift decision in Calzaghe's favor.
I'm sorry, this resume does not scream P4P to me. After such a long career, Calzaghe is still roughly unproven as an elite fighter because he has refused to fight a proven, elite fighter in his prime. When people talk about this guy, they mainly talk about who he COULD beat, not who he has actually beaten. They talk about the guy as if he's still a prospect because his resume is utter garbage.
On top of that, he will only take a risky fight if it's in his hometown. Back when RJJ was in his prime, he wouldn't travel to the US to make the fight. Now that RJJ is washed up, he's more than willing to consider the fight because RJJ would have to go to the UK for it to happen. The Lacy and Kessler fights don't happen if they didn't agree to fight on Calzaghe's turf.
Joke Calzaghe is just not a P4P level fighter...
