You call yourself a Boxing fan, yet your actions prove otherwise. This fight doesn't need to happen right now, at this moment, but it should be happening at the end of this year or mid next year. No, Cotto is not great. He is a deserving young fighter on the cusp. There is a distinction between those two things. This fight with Margarito will be the first time in a long while where Cotto will be fighting someone who isn't
- on the downside
- weaker or smaller than him

Of course this is relevant, because it says something about how deserving Cotto is of a shot at Floyd.
I do not believe Cotto will beat Margarito. But Margarito would be a step to securing the fight with Floyd. But if Cotto loses, his chance is gone. He has to win.
The question is relevant to the preceding question of why Floyd should fight Cotto. Mayweather is in the stage of his career where he can demand the elite level paydays, or he won't fight. He has climbed through 5 different weight classes and fought tough comp there in order to be where he is, outboxing many significant challenges along the way. He is the gilded P4P Champion.
Maybe a win over Margarito will endear Cotto more to Puerto Rico, which is what he needs, because he has alienated a lot of potential fanbase with his reluctance to engage in many of the sport's customs. He seems to have no promotional awareness, and that refusal to engage has cost him a level of support from potential fans in his own country. That support is necessary to make the elite level payday that Floyd "Money" Mayweather requires to step in the ring at this stage of his career. Floyd owes Cotto nothing. Cotto has to reach out and grab it if he wants it. He has so far shown a reluctance to do that, and an indifference to the subject of fighting Mayweather whenever it is raised. If he wants Floyd, why doesn't he call him out in a patriotic way that will win him some more support from his people?

Horus talks the truth about Cotto beating up on many physically smaller men on his way through jr. welter and welter. He should start picking on fighters who fulfil both of the following criteria
- are his own size
- are not on the downslide
- are capable of giving him a genuine test
Margarito will be the first time Cotto has put himself in such a situation. We shall see how he fares. But I expect the fight will provide our answer to the question of how deserving Miguel Cotto is of a shot at the P4P #1.Comment
