Arum could make other fights, I disagree. A rematch with Mosley would have been a potentially more lucrative option for Cotto with very little to lose even in defeat. And that's not to say that would happen anyway. Mosley seems less dangerous than Margarito at this point.

Mayorga has also put his name in the mix at 147..

The second part of your post is spot on. I fully agree and that's well stated.

Well, alright. Risk/Reward goes out the window. I like how you put that.

The truth is though, Margarito's name isn't even in the discussion of who is the best Welterweight in the world. Cotto's name is. It isn't even exchange for where Cotto is right now. And if something goes wrong there will likely never be a De La Hoya or Mayweather fight for Cotto. That's alot to lose.

Cotto is right here right now. He's that close to the huge money and the Undisputed this and the P4P that, ect.. What's he doing ****ing around with Margarito? Makes no sense, it's a Top Rank setup. Bob Arum's whole reasoning for Boxing not being dead at the press conference was an explanation of television ratings in Mexico. Dude is plotting.
Thats an intresting theory on Arum.
He's put ALOT of work into Cotto tho. I'll have a think about it.

Right now, Cotto's legacy is that he is the best WW in the world in 2008. Most people seem to be agreed on this, although in truth with his three best welterweight wins being Qunintana, Judah and Mosley, he has not faced the kind of opposition on which great reputations are ultimately made. His reputation rests mostly on being the most solid of a solid bunch. Other than Mayweather there is no real career defining fight out there for him.

Nobody thinks that Margarito is the best welter in the world, or they shouldn't. The talk of the Cotto-Margarito fight being a Floyd eliminator stems mostly from the desire to see Cotto fight Mayweather rather than an assessment that Margarito is challenging Cotto in terms of who deserves the shot. What fighting and beating Margarito will do for Cotto's legacy is show us a little bit more of what we think we already know, that Cotto is the best of the current crop of welters. Margarito is easily a more dangerous opponent than Quintana, Judah or an old Mosley and a W against him is just another step along the road Cotto must take to get to Mayweather. It will be a good fight, a good win, but in and of itself, Cotto beating Margarito doesn't really prove all that much.

Probably yeah, he knows what Quintana is all about now tho so if weight making dont kill em he should be able to bag a W

He is right on the Clottey and Williams level. Good, but nothing exceptional.

It would be a solid win. But in no way will it define his career. Add to the fact that Marg has multiple loses. And Paul Williams already beat him, which most poeple think sucks on this baord. So he wouldn't get any all time historic credit for it. It would just be a nice win.
