First of all, Margarito is just as slow defensively is he is offensively, if not slower. He gets hit no matter who he's facing. And he gets hit hard and often. Margarito is a punching bag on D and he is clearly, plainly, extremely hard to hurt all things considered. He takes more flush monster shots than most guys in the sport aside from an Andrade or Feliciano. So it's volume, location, and the force behind those shots - which he eats.

Lujan has been getting chatted about here recently.. At the time he fought Cotto he had 17 or 18 knockouts in 20 or so wins, and he was NAILING Margarito. Then there's the megaton blasts Clottey was catching him with and the Cintron depth charges.

Margarito has been hit good and taken it well. Trust.

Where are my fellow Cotto experts?

When was the last time Cotto hurt a fighter in the early or mid rounds?

Let's talk about all the recent occasions.

well that's what he's famous for. taking it. but that was not the question. no one doubts the fact that tony can take punishment, but what i was asking for was miguel among those hard punchers. the fight hasnt happened yet, but the credentials say so. this is not paul williams. cotto can go in tough regardless, and while tony can hold a punch better it doesnt take away form miguel's ability as a puncher.
gatti was also one of the guys who took a lot of punishment. another guy that comes to mind is the light heavyweight mathew saad muhamad who also took punishment in order to give it back.
but all that accumulation of punches he received to the head, is not helping tony in the ring. its good to know you're tough, but it doesnt do you any good.

Tell me about Cotto's ability as a puncher now that we have Margarito's tolerance capability in hand. I'd like to hear your view.

he's not the most devastating puncher but he has good power.
as a junior welterweight he was a really good puncher. when he moved up, he gave a vicious beating to quintana, his face said it all after the fight. he hurt and knocked out judah (and i know you might not agree because of low blows) but the power was apparent. in the urkal fight he might have struggled but it also had to do with the way urkal fought. nonetheless the fight was stopped by the corner. the body shots were thudding and you could see urkal was hurt by them, but he's also a very durable horse.
his latest fight with gomez also told alot. no matter the guy's credentials, cotto did what was expected. if he would have struggled it would have been a different matter. and gomez also fought guys bigger than him without getting knocked out or seriously hurt, that shouldnt be left out.
he went 12 rounds with mosley, but so what. mosley never been knocked out, sure he's been hurt by guys like forrest, and wright on occasion, by mosley also went 24 rounds with oscar. who some may say punches harder than miguel.
also just because you might not get the ko in a fight it doesnt make you a lesser puncher. i can give you names that tyson and foreman fought who shouldnt have lasted, but they did, just as some of miguel's opponents did. miguel has an ability to hurt guys. and i dont doubt that he can hurt margarito in this fight.

I agree, Cotto is not a big puncher. Good post.

Oh, and Quintana? Williams was hurting him to the body too. Quintana is one of the softest pros around the middle - and the back shot that dropped him at the end of the fight was almost on his spine.
