Everyone would have wanted a piece of Joe if he was available.
Why? Prime 90s Joe was a hard punching southpaw with the most awkward style imaginable. He was undefeated and in his first step up to world level had knocked the elite Eubank down and outfought him in an absolute war. Joe also had zero profile, so the risk was huge and the reward was zero.
Prime Calzaghe was the definition of the kind of fighter big names like to avoid.

But the great man himself didn't think it would be a cakewalk, he defended his decision not to fight Joe in Europe on a risk / reward basis. He thought he would beat Joe, but with too many rounds open to 'a hometown interpretation'; To me that's a back handed compliment 'I'd beat you but not well enough to risk a hometowner'
