Even if he beats Margarito, those who have made up their minds will say margarito is not a good measure, and the fight with Floyd would suck so bad that it would just be the biggest let down for all fans.
I grew up watching Tito and he was great in a different way than Cotto, they are two different fighters, and two different welterweights, It would have been great to see them fight in their prime but that will not happen.
the only thing that should happen is that people should give Cotto the credit he diserves as a fighter who is about the honor of the sport, I believe that he fights with that honor in hand just like Tito did and I expect that Puerto Rico has many of these warriors ready to continue the tradition.

One more thing, Why would a loss to margarito take anything away from him posibly being the greatest WW?
No one discredits Tito for his Losses.

Haha.. This is gonna be good. I can't wait. Cotto needs to shock the world. A knockdown in the first round would mean a lot.

a couple points......first, sweet p was past his prime when he faced trinidad, hell he was on the downside of his career when he faced oscar. also, oscar was boxing the **** outta trinidad, and actually he "lost" the fight b/c he began to run. when he fought, he was winning.

the shane mosely-cotto fight was entertaining, but ut wasn't as close as you'd like to believe, it couldn't have "GONE EITHER WAY," cotto cleary won.

i'd give you that trinidad may have more overall power than cotto, but cotto is by far the more "well-rounded" boxer, he got snap on his **** too, plus he likes to go to the body. trinidad has problems with good "boxers," so if cotto went toe-to-toe, trinidad might come out on top, but if he was able to make adjustments like he did in the mosely fight, cotto would come away with the victory.

that being said, i like tito # q at welter-15 sucessful defenses etc., etc., he didn't lose a fight until he moved up to middleweight...........but cotto has the potential to have the same type of career, and like i said, he's the better overall fighter, so i guess time will tell whether or not he continues to live up to his hype, and a win over margarito is another step in the right direction.
Well, there's a lot in what you say. But the article was about "The Best PR Welterweight Ever". So we can't project into the unseeable future to assume that Cotto will be "this or that". We can only go on the facts, which are, that as a welterweight, Trinidad was impossible to beat, unless you could box like a peak DelaHoya for 12 full rounds. No one was ever able to do THAT. And, contrary to what you may think, Trinidad had won several of the first 8 rounds, about 3 anyway. He didn't win them as showily as Oscar, but he won them. If you look again at the video, the beginning of Oscar's "cave-in" was a huge, fast body shot from Trinidad in the middle of the 5th. it can be seen that Oscar was badly shaken. And, except that he didn't completely turn his back and sprint away, he ran for the last 5 rounds.

To get back to the main point, Cotto, although maybe TODAY a better BOXER, is not a better boxer than Trinidad WAS. Trinidad was both a top fighter and a good boxer. In a matchup between them, it would be almost no contest. If Cotto punched him to the body, he'd get 2 back.

So Cotto has the next 3-4 years to make a record of defences, in both quality and style, to match Trinidad. Can he do it" ?? Who knows?? He takes far too much punishment in most of his fights, something Trinidad NEVER did, except ONCE.

I don't think that a win over a veteran like Margarito with 5-6 losses is what would make Cotto a "great" and a better welterweignt than Trinidad. What chance do you think Margarito would have had against a peak Trinidad?? The reason that no one is concerned about Trinidad's losses, is that they were all at a much heavier weight beginning at middleweight, and perhaps even that was the indication that he was on the downgrade. He conquered 3 different divisions unbeaten, until then.

I'm not saying that Cotto can't do it, but it's a tall order, and will take him years, fights, and top opponents. I'd say it's very unlikely.

As I said, it was the WAY in which he beat them. Sweet pea, Macho and Oscar are all Hall of Famers, and even though both Camacho and Whittaker were past their best, I don't think they even won a SINGLE round of the 24 against Trinidad, who is, supposedly, suddenly, to not be able to box, but is only a pure slugger.

Therefore, they should have been able to "box his ears off", and he shouldn't have been able to "lay a glove" on them. But.....that's NOT what happened.

They were still good enough that ONLY they and Oscar, went the distance with Trinidad in his Title defences.
