If there is a more viable opponent out there than I wouldn't bash him for it. I would be dissappointed because it would be a great fight but boxing is a business.

The only way he could get out of it without looking the worse for it is if he were to take a unification fight instead. However, Floyd isn't going to get in there with him this summer and the WBO belt is completely tied up in the rematch. There really isn't another route.

Of course. Backing out of this fight would be a terrible move.

Cotto needs to beat Marg. His leverage against DLH and May depends on it. If Cotto beats Marg convincingly he solidifies his status as the genuine fighter taking the hard fights and winning them (as opposed to the to businessman pikcing their fights too carefully).

Cotto blasting Marg out would make him a legit candidate for p4p#1, above Joe and Manny and arguable with May.

I'd say it would be in order since the boxing world was already told that this fight was an almost assured lock for July. I think that the reason Cotto hasn't signed for Margarito is because Mayweather hasn't yet signed for the de la Hoya rematch so de la Hoya officially has no opponent for his next HBO PPV date. If Mayweather elects to do something else (which I doubt he will since Hatton has 2 fights lined up), Cotto could be the front runner for that date.

Which at the end of the day is no excuse for stepping out of a very significant fight in the division Cotto is loyal to.

This guy makes some great points.

It would suck if this fight didn't go through, and about the only way I wouldn't be pissed off at Cotto for not fighting Margarito is if all of the sudden he made a fight with Mayweather. Other than that, he'd ****ing suck for not fighting Marg...maybe a mega-money fight with Oscar would be understandable too.
