A 185 lb journeyman named Henry Cooper was seconds away from stopping Ali, back when he was "untouchable." A better thread would be Vitali could have KO'd Ali, just not very likely. A journeyman named Buster Douglas proved anything can happen between two heavyweights.

Vitali WOULD give Ali some trouble with such a stellar chin and even more stellar power. HOWEVER, it's Ali we are talking about. Too fast, too skilled, too much will.

Liston had a longer reach than Vitali. Can you imagine how hard it would be to fight someone like that?

He was also built like Tyson who you worship.

And could destroy any man with one punch.

You know, it takes a real leap of logic to go from Ali being dropped by a left hook to Ali was seconds from being stopped. Ali was dropped by a left hook from Joe Frazier, a fighter who hit MUCH harder than Henry Cooper, and bounced back up and finished the fight. Knowing what we know of Ali's recuperative powers and what we know about Cooper's finishing ability the only FAIR conclusion is: Ali was seconds away from.....clearing his head and stopping Cooper on cuts the next round. I've been hearing this BS about the Cooper fight for years. All it is is wishful thinking on the part of the Hate Ali crowd; there are a number of them that post on this forum. It really must suck to them: All the wishful thinking and they STILL are unable to change reality. Sorry boys, reality is reality and you all can keep the fantasy world you're living in.

                HE is the racist.
I only call big mouthed black fighters that. The term "white hope" is racist as hell and it' still used. The only reason the Russian fighters are dominating the heavyweight division is "because the top American fighters are playing football and basketball." What kind of bull**** is that?

I saw two all white basketball teams beat an all black professional basketball team in the last Olympics a couple years ago. Maybe the best American basketball players are now rapping...

Many this day seem to thing that today's athletes are better due to conditioning etc. In some aspects that is true and it can make a particular fighter better than without that conditioning.

What they fail to realize, is that boxing's gene pool is much smaller now than it used to be. Right up into the 80's, Boxing was still a huge sport and the amount of people entering the game was multiple times larger than it is now.

To young athletes, boxing is no longer a first choice for them to get into. You have less people entering the sport, thus the potential for special fighters is dramatically reduced.

When Ali was in his prime, he was the top dog over other heavyweights who themselves, would make today's crop of heavyweights look amateurish.
