A Margarito victory should do nothing to enchance or detract from either guy in the long run with hardcore Boxing observers. The nature of the victory is going to tell the whole story.

I've already seen enough intelligent and informed enthusiastic Cotto advocates here indicate that they realize this is a bad style matchup for Cotto. This won't be a shock, or in any way damaging in the view of those who are educated and honest.

Some fans are going to have a harder time with any surprises.

I agree but I do think it will hurt Cotto in the long run as far as him being considered the greatest WW of this time. I know Cotto fans will argue this but if you look at Cotto's career, he came at the right time.

When DLH, Mosley, Vargas, Tito, ect.......were all past their primes. Now I know it's not Cotto's fault and for that I don't blaim him but if he loses to Margarito, experts will say he could have never had a chance to beat the fighters I mentioned in their primes and therefore tarnish his legacy and I think would have a point.

Cotto is on a path of greatness, a loss to a fighter like Margarito would hurt him being recognized as "great". He would be considered very good but not great because as much as I like Margarito, he needs to beat Cotto and possibly Mayweather to be considered a great fighter as well.

Do me a favor and elaborate on the "a fighter like Margarito" part. By that you mean it would be worse to lose to Margarito then someone else?

look at the guys Cotto has beaten since his 10th pro fight man, let's be for real here man anyone who feels this will damage his legacy doesn't respect Boxing. the sweat it takes to beat the guys Cotto has beaten, all the undefeated records of good guys who went on to become future champions he's compiled is worthy enough to be remembered forever. name someone else with 32 fights who's undefeated and has a resume like Cotto, name just 1 dude today besides joe Calzaghe who can claim that ****. damn near half or more of his fights were fought against past or present world champions, guys with rep and whom have already fought the best and this young kid comes and humiliates them..

ain't no need to even continue yo it would just be ****** for anyone to think some dumb **** like that.

Because if you take a real look at Cotto's Career

He never fought a young, prime, active, p4p fighter before.
is a credible argument to downplay the Historical significances a win over cotto is..

He only won his titles by fighting in Vacant matches is a credible argument to downplay the Historical significance a win over cotto is..

And Cotto was never highly ranked in the P4P list anyways So a win over Cotto is not as impressive as it could be if Cotto fought better Competition .....is a credible argument to downplay the Historical significance a win over cotto is..

Cotto is still a good fighter on the cusp of greatness....
but right now he isnt a great fighter yet...
              BUMP.........!!!!

Of course it will. Cotto is supposed to be some sort of Floyd killing, can do anything superstar, so a loss to Margarito would undoubtedly tarnish that, although Cotto would still have plenty of time to do more and put the shine back on himself.

At this point Cotto is really just a a good welterweight with the potential to be one of the best. His career and wins are excellent but he has never defeated the truly great opponent that will push him up to the highest level, but he has the best record of all the active welters and is deservedly regarded as the best. Beating Margarito will definitely add to his sparkle if he can do it, but there would also be no real shame in losing to him either.

Nah, cause he would have lost to a good fighter...
after beating good fighters, he would get a pass for losing to one
i think he should... If he loses they will probably be a rematch anyway

Name one great, even one really good fighter who has ever lost to Margarito.

Hell yeah it will ruin him.
