The people bashing Lee simply just know him from his movies.
He was a true Martial Artist and basically devoted his entire life to it. If it weren't for him there'd be no MMA at all.
Also keep in mind that Bruce Lee wasn't just a "Kung Fu" artist. He was actually against just learning one style of fighting, hence why he was challenged by the Kung Fu schools in San Fransisco. He learned Western Boxing, Ju Jitsu, Wrestling, Aikido, etc. The Grand Master of Tae Kwon Do at the time (Jhoon Rhee) stated in an interview about Lee asking him to teach him kicks (considering at the time Lee's philosophy was never to kick over the waist). He said in 3 days he mastered kicks that took normal students months even years to perfect. The dude was naturally gifted.
As far as Bruce fighting in real life, ask your man Bolo (Bloodsport) what happened to him when he tested Lee on the set of Enter the Dragon. Bob Wall (the white dude Lee ****s up) states there were a **** load of guys testing him on a daily basis, and one day Bolo confronted him about fighting with Lee ignoring him until Bolo made a move and catapulted Lee to arm lock and knee trap him against a wall as Bruce punched the back of Bolo's head numerous times (and keep in mind Bruce was 130lbs to Bolo's 220lbs).
Now Boxing wise, if he dedicated himself to boxing I can't see how he wouldn't be successful. He trained in Western boxing and was an avid fan of Muhammed Ali (and you can see some of the characteristics in some of his movies against Chuck Norris & Bob Wall).
Lee = Greatest Fighter of Our Time hands down.
