I don't think Lewis was "scared" I do think he thought he would probably lose a rematch and at best he knew it was going to be a war.
Let's remember that Lewis CHOSE to fight Johnson when Vitali was his mandatory and only fought him when Johnson got injured 10 days before the fight and Vitali was man enough to fight the Champ on such short notice. Then HBO put pressure on Lewis by telling him that Vitali is more than happy to take the fight on such short notice. Lewis was losing 4-2 on every card and was lucky that Vitali got a fluke cut most likely from a headbutt. Then Lewis says he will give Vitali a rematch if he proves his eye is healed which Vitali did in spectacular fashion by knocking Johnson (a fighter Lewis deemed worthy to fight instead of his mandatory Vitali) the **** out. Then 2 months late Lewis decides to turn down his biggest payday when he was going to take Tyson to court to try and force a rematch before he fought Vitali.
Lewis had no intension's of retiring and wanted an easy payday with a Tyson rematch instead of a war he was most likely going to lose with Vitali.
Why was Lewis trying to give Sanders and Williams tips on how to beat Vitali? Does anybody really think Lewis retires if Vitali lost to Johnson or stayed retired had Vitali lost to Sanders or Williams?
