I think Hopkins held and grabbed for 12 rounds for a reason. He knew if the fight was open and Calzaghe got into any kind of flow he would not have lasted the pace. That much is very obvious.

It was fought at quite a slow pace compared to other Calzaghe fights and Hopkins still had to feign injury and take a few minutes off because he was gassed.

I think this phenomenon can be blamed on the fact that Calzaghe was so criminally underrated by some americans (and Hopkins was somewhat overrated) that they have to clutch at any available straws in order to save face. And Dan Rafael is filled with praise for Calzaghe.
